Find out the real story of how and why Iraq came to be as it is.
By Marc Roberts
This is a deeply detailed and informative book. I read this because I wanted to know how Iraq came to be--now that it is on the verge of partition. And now I know. The various chapters overlap somewhat (these originally were a series of papers presented at a conference). But that is a small point. For example, folks often say the Sykes-Picot agreement, made between the British and the French during WW I, defined modern Iraq, and I always believed that. But from this book I learned that was not true. The agreement was renegotiated to give the Kurdish north to the British (which was north of agreed-up line dividing the two countries spheres of influence) because the Brits wanted the oil for their navy. This was in return for a British agreement to allow the French direct rule in Lebanon! Indeed that oil was the real reason the Kurds never got their independent state.
