About the Author
In 1968, Josef Koudelka photographed the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, publishing these images under the initials P. P. (Prague Photographer). Koudelka left Czechoslovakia in 1970, became stateless, was then granted political asylum in England, and shortly thereafter joined Magnum Photos. Koudelka has published eleven books of photographs focusing on the relationship between contemporary man and the landscape, including Gypsies (1975), Exiles (1988), Black Triangle (1994), Invasion 68: Prague (2008), and Wall (2013). Significant exhibitions of his work have been held at the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography, New York; Hayward Gallery, London; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Koudelka is the recipient of the Medal of Merit awarded by the Czech Republic (2002) and numerous other awards. In 2012, he was named Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. He is based in Paris and Prague.

Czesław Miłosz, poet, essayist, translator, and novelist, was born in 1911 in Lithuania. He moved to Warsaw in the late 1930s and during World War II worked as a writer and an editor for Resistance publications. After the war Miłosz joined the Polish diplomatic service, before breaking with the government in 1951. In 1961 he became professor of Slavic languages and literatures at the University of California, Berkeley. He received numerous honors, including the Nobel Prize in 1981. His books include The Captive Mind, The Issa Valley, The Land of Ulro, The Seizure of Power, Native Realm, and The Separate Notebooks. He died in 2004.

Stuart Alexander is international specialist in photographs at Christie’s, New York. As an independent curator and scholar he has published widely and organized numerous exhibitions with major international publishers, collections, and museums. He is recognized as an authority on the work of Brassa�, Robert Frank, and Josef Koudelka, and has contributed an essay to the catalog for Koudelka’s retrospective exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago.

One of the most riveting, emotional, and soulful street photography books ever published.

“Exiles” by Josef Koudelka is one of the must-buy books of this year. Previously (before this re-print by aperture) the book would sell second-hand for around $300. I personally couldn’t afford a copy — and when I heard this edition (the last and final) was coming out, I jumped on it like a fat kid on cupcakes.

Before writing this book review, I re-read the book several times, read a lot of interviews by Josef Koudelka– and reflected on the book (and the life and photography of Koudelka).

To sum up, I believe that Josef Koudelka is one of the best photographers who has ever lived (and is still living today) — and his philosophies on life and photography has deeply inspired and moved me.

## Background on Exiles

To give a little bit of background of “Exiles” — it was first published in 1988 and included images (mostly) in Europe from his 20-year-exile from Czechoslovakia, starting in 1970 (after leaving the Soviet-led invasion of Prague).

This is what Cornell Capa once wrote about Exiles:

“Koudelka’s unsentimental, stark, brooding, intensely human imagery reflect his own spirit, the very essence of an exile who is at home wherever his wandering body finds haven in the night…”

Personally I think “Exiles” is such an incredible book because it gives you a more personal look into the life, trials, and tribulations of Koudelka himself. I see “Exiles” as a very personal photography journal/memoir of the travel, life, and journeys of Josef Koudelka. His other great body of work (“Gypsies”) is more anthropological and sociological in nature– examining outwards towards the life and communities of the Roma people (politically correct phrase for “Gypsies”).

## New Edition of “Exiles”

This new edition is published in 2014, and includes 10 new images. I believe this is the third re-print of “Exiles” (and final, said by Koudelka). Every edition changed the sequencing of images (and edit) slightly. I don’t own the other versions of Exiles so I can’t speak whether this edition is any “better” or “worse” than the others– but it is still a photography book that every passionate street photographer should own in his/her own library.

The new edition includes a total of 75 images, ranging from the years (1968-1994)– images over a 26 year span! It makes me realize that for truly great work– it takes a long time.

## My review of “Exiles”

“Exiles” is not just a photography book– it is a personal journey of Koudelka’s life as an exile. To illustrate how he feels about the world, he uses dark, light, shadows, mystery, people, religion, death, life, and hope.

Most of the images in the book are open-ended and can be interpreted however the viewer pleases. All of the “explanations” I provided in this review are just my own– my own interpretations. I use my own personal life experiences to tell the stories in my mind.

I think also what I learned from “Exiles” is how not every image needs to be a strong image– certain images are necessary for the flow and sequence of images. I see “Exiles” as a journey — and more of a movie than just a set of images. I also love how he used the different “chapters” to separate the images. There is a great sense of “pacing” of the images.

Although I do feel that Exiles could have used a slightly tighter edit (maybe around 5-6 fewer images)– the body of work is pretty bulletproof, and damn solid. Koudelka is a master of composition, capturing life, and capturing forms– even in the landscapes he shoots.

I hope to aspire to one day create a body of work that has the same amount of emotion and soul as “Exiles”.

Worthy to have at home, in your private library.

Before buying the book, I have to say I was a little bit reluctant to, despite having several of his books. Frankly, I like his work...

Definitely one of my top 5 books of all time. Koudelka is an absolute master of black and white and this work encompasses many of his travels and is organized very well. The print quality is amazing as you would expect from this publisher. This book is a must have for anyone who is remotely interested in photography.

Being a huge fan of the Panzerwreck Series of books, it is a no-brainer for me to immediately have a feeling of excitement when a new edition is released. Panzerwrecks 20 – Ostfront 3, as is all of the Panzerwrecks Series of books, been produced in the highest quality. The photographs are almost always cleanly reproduced giving a vivid and revealing look into the destruction of these vehicles. The information presented supporting the pictures in this book is informative shedding light onto how the panzers met their demise. It is not hard for me to recommend Panzerwrecks 20 – Ostfront 3 to any historians, modelers or simple anyone interested in this subject matter! Panzerwrecks continues to not disappoint us with their sustained series of books! (Modelers Social Club Forum)

About the Author
Lee Archer is a military vehicle historian living in Old Heathfield, Sussex with his wife and daughter. He previously designed master models for Accurate Armour of Scotland and was a regular contributor to model magazines. Lee has published twenty books on German fighting vehicles of World War 2.

Kamen Nevenkin is a military researcher and author from Sofia, Bulgaria. He has published many books about the fighting on the Eastern Front.

A bit of a departure from the usual...

... the book starts with 5 pages of information on Russian ground attack aircraft, armament, & tactics before continuing with the usual twisted German (& Hungarian) wreckage. The entire book, this time, is about the Balaton battles in early 1945. Pictures are from a Russian archive that are mostly unpublished.

very inspirational book

I love this book! Well done and very inspirational, just like you'd expect from Jim Rohn. I recently started reviewing a lot of this material and this is one of my favorites. Had the pleasure of seeing him a few years ago, before his death, and the same motivating spirit that he gave in his live talks is here. If you have enjoyed him live, you will love this. It's a wonderful example of his legacy to self-development.

Lessons on Life by Jim Rohn

The reason for the one star is that I believe the book is a rip off. I have been a Jim Rohn fan since April 13, 1994. I have attended several of his seminars and I have four cassette tape seminars that he was selling back then plus I have all of his books. This is basically a booklet of quotes from those seminars. Each page contains art work with one of his quotes. If you have his book "The Treasury of Quotes" you don't need this book. Of course if you like pictures of trees, water, people, childern turning flips and of the sun setting you may like it. The book also contains a DVD as a bonus.

Good information from a master just not a lot of it. Only one thought to a page & then not on every page. Not my idea of a book. more like a collection of good sayings. They have meaning and valuable messages but whole book could have been written on ten pages.

About the Author
J. A. (John) Turley grew up in San Diego, California. Advanced degrees in petroleum engineering and ocean engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Miami and a three-year petroleum-engineering professorship at Marietta College preceded his oil-and-gas-industry career. His two decades of offshore drilling- and project-management responsibilities with a major U.S. energy company began with the Gulf of Mexico, evolved to the North Sea, were bolstered by executive education at Harvard Business School, and led him to be named manager of worldwide drilling. After a number of years as the company's senior technical officer, he elected to retire early to focus on writing. THE SIMPLE TRUTH, narrative nonfiction, is Turley's debut publication. Fiction: The Best Way To Make The Truth About Deepwater Horizon Come Alive

Two infamous sea disasters that we must keep in our collective consciousness, and from which we must study the lessons, to insure the safety of future generations yet unborn.

When James Cameron set forth to make the R.M.S. Titanic's tale come alive on the screen, he chose "faction", a fact-based fiction approach. Cameron's fictional characters Jack and Rose were always in the "right place at the right time" (more so than any real individual survivors of the Titanic) to tell the most complete story possible about the ill-fated vessel and the hundreds of souls aboard.

In this book, John Turley takes the same approach. Mr. Turley is a retired petroleum engineer with many years of oil-rig experience, so he knew how to create fictional characters who would be in the right place, at the right time, asking the right questions. Specifically, Jessica Pherma, the rig's geologist. Jessica is the "Rose" asking Thomas Andrews about the lifeboat capacity, only more so. Jessica has access to the highest levels of the rig's administration, yet she can logically ask the same questions you, the general reader, would ask. Jessica, and all of her experiences in the story, perfectly illustrate Turley's masterful command of blending fact and fiction into "faction".

One paragraph in this novel brilliantly illustrated all the reasons why Jessica chose a career in geology, only to find all of those reasons being negated by her presence on the Deepwater Horizon on that fateful evening. This paragraph was a stunning insight into the basic character of what shapes our humanity, never mind that it's "fiction".

Make no mistake, this story can get a bit technical at times. Fortunately, Mr. Turley went to great effort to insure that you can choose how far you wish to delve into the technology behind the story. Extensive footnotes and diagrams allow you to dive in as deep as you wish, or you can skip them and stay with the main story. Accessing the supplementary material is in fact easier on the Kindle than it is in the paper book.

Movie producers, take note. If anyone wishes to make a film about the Deepwater Horizon, you should use this book as the base. We all know how successful Cameron's "right place at the right time" characters Jack and Rose were in making the story of the Titanic come alive for the audience. Turley's composite characters Jessica, Barry, Tanker, and Daylight succeed as much (or more so) than Jack and Rose did in making the events of a large-scale marine disaster accessible, immediate and moving to the general audience.

John Turley has succeeded in telling the story of the Deepwater Horizon in a dramatic style that will appeal to readers of general fiction, while simultaneously giving you access to the essential, simple truths behind the oversights and general arrogance that led to this disaster. Imagine what a book about the Titanic would have been like if it had been written by the Captain of the Olympic. For the Deepwater Horizon, you don't have to imagine such a novel. It's right here, on this Amazon page.

The world needs more people like John Turley, to record for posterity the simple truths behind the large-scale disasters, and present them in a fashion people can enjoy reading while they learn those important lessons.

There have been many books about the after-effects BP Macondo Deepwater Horizon, and many about the debacle of BP's response to what is arguably the worst petroleum-related affront to nature since the Exxon-Valdez. But John Turley's _The Simple Truth_ is the only book I know of that tells the story of what _led_ to the disaster. Written as fiction, Turley has taken the literary liberty of combining dozens of individuals both on and off the rig into a handfull of fascinating characters whose decisions, both well-intentioned and not so much, led to worst environmental disaster of the last 20+ years.

Turley writes about the many failures, bureaucratic, individual and mechanical, with the authority of a multiple-decade petroleum engineer, someone who actually worked on offshore rigs. And he doesn't shy away from engineering details. But instead of boring the reader, Turely expertly weaves the technicalities into the narrative so the reader enjoys really _understanding_ what went wrong and why. The main characters: late twenty- or early thirty-something Jessica Pherma is a geologist with no real-world experience is mentored by the seasoned rig foreman Barry Edgerton. As Jessica learns about the workings of a rig from Barry so does the reader.

_The Simple Truth_ is a "must read" for anyone who wants to understand the BP Macondo Deepwater Horizon blow-out and the resulting oil-spill and _why_ it happened. Residents of the gulf, friends and family of those who survived the blow-out and the eleven men who did not, ocean lovers and politicians (whose job it is ultimately to make sure nothing like this ever happens again) -- all of these will find this an entertaining, engaging and informative book. Fully footnoted with numerous pictures and diagrams, the book is nonetheless a captivating read about _people_, both their virtues and foibles.

A great and outstanding Technical book explaining Macondo Incident

This is an excellent and outstanding technically written book about the Macondo Incident, unfortunate disaster that took eleven hard working colleagues innocent lives with a major environmental impact that will effect Gulf of Mexico for many decayed to come and the Upstream Oil & Gas Industry activities. The book has been written technically very well. It has been written with the supporting documents and technical information. If you are Petroleum or Chemical Engineer who works in Upstream Oil & Gas Industry (Drilling & Completion), this is a must book to read. In addition, if you have experiences in Process Safety no matter in any of the Oil & Gas streams (Downstream, Midstream or Upstream), it will add a lot to your understanding about the cases of this disaster. John has explained the incident so well that really will open your eyes. I highly encourage everyone who is in Oil & Gas industry to read this book.

Theology is fracturing along tension lines once hidden by the great modern consensus that reigned from Schleiermacher's day till our own. Now, all of it is in dispute: its starting point, its self-awareness, its claim to truth, its method and interaction with other disciplines and institutions in church, academy, and society.

Rieger offers an enlightening way to understand the chief strands or options in theology today and a valuable proposal for resituating theology around the crucial issue of inclusion. He sees four competing vectors at work in today's Christian theology: Theology of Identity (liberal theology, represented by Schleiermacher and founded in the self), Theology of Difference (dialectical theology, represented by Barth and founded in the Wholly Other), Theology and the Postmodern (postcritical theology, represented by Lindbeck and founded on the text), and Theology and the Underside (liberation theology, represented by Gutierrez and others and founded in the interests of the other person).

Further, Rieger goes on to propose that each of these is in some way exclusionary and elitist; the mass of humanity and the globe's most pressing problems do not invade this cathedral, and in some ways the market itself has replaced God. Religious thought can remain viable only when it is grounded in an openness that reaches beyond the global market and postmodern squabbles, critiques its own complicity in the situation, and resituates itself in express commitment to those left out of today's "gated community".

Theology, or What’s Left of It What’s left of theological reflection at the beginning of the twenty-first century? In this book I do not side with the doomsday prophets who, idealizing the status quo of yesterday, revel in announcing the end, or at least the decline, of a long list of things, from personal family values to academic standards to Western civilization as a whole. Neither do I argue that the beliefs and doctrines of the church are vanishing. What is often perceived as a doctrinal crisis is perhaps not so much that doctrine as such is evaporating but that the operative doctrines are changing. People still hold many beliefs about God and the world. The polls have remained fairly consistent over the years: More than 80 percent of all Americans claim to believe in God. It can hardly be argued, then, that our current crisis has to do with a lack of belief in God per se.

The more pressing question is, How can we assess and deal with the changing beliefs and doctrines of the church in light of the challenges of the present? How do we guide them in ways that are both constructive and self-critical, thus developing new receptivity and openness to God’s power? More specifically, how can we do this in ways that integrate accounts of those aspects of our current dilemma which usually go unnoticed in mainline theological reflection and the churches? One example is the (still mostly unconscious) mechanisms of exclusion by which the majority of humanity, particularly those who do not have a share in the structures of privilege and power, are prevented access not only to the centers of theological reflection but also to the benefits of society. A growing number of theologians around the globe have, often independently of each other, come to suspect that the major problem today is the exclusion of more and more people tied to shifting structures of power! and changes in the global economy.

Sorting through the major challenges to theological reflection today, I will reassess the traditional guideposts of theological thought, such as questions of authority, critical reflection, and matters of doctrine. Two insights are at the heart of this study. First, we need to develop new sensitivity to the fact that theology is never done in a vacuum. Theological thought is often shaped by what its practitioners barely notice, including political and economic structures.2 If theology is to have any future, it is no longer sufficient simply to follow the ideas of the great theological minds and one’s own theological and ideological preferences. Second, if this is clear, the question becomes how to develop not only resistance to those pressures but also theological alternatives.

It is a sign of hope that many theologians are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that theology is connected to everyday life. More and more of us are no longer content with getting the doctrines right or developing ever more elaborate theological systems. Looking beyond the tranquil halls of academia, however tentatively, theology is starting to claim broader horizons. Yet even where theology begins to hook up with life, our horizons often either remain fairly narrow, determined by a self-centeredness, or they become so broad that we are unable to discern the cracks and fissures of everyday life. As will become clear in the argument of this book, a closer look and an encounter with people who live on the underside of history is necessary.

In this book I will explore how the traditional guideposts of theological thought relate to the mechanisms of exclusion established in modern and postmodern times. I develop my argument in relation to four prominent modes of theological reflection, constructed during the past two centuries, which represent the major options available today: liberal, neoorthodox, postliberal, and liberation approaches. These options manifest in their own ways some of the competing ideological pulls on theology and the churches today. How do they mirror and perpetuate the mechanisms of exclusion? What is their potential for providing theological guidelines that are able to develop resistance to exclusion and, in the process, promote new forms of inclusiveness in both church and world? Exploring the impact of exclusionary social structures on theological thinking, I will specifically investigate the web of connections between the exclusion of other people and the theological displacement of the d! ivine Other. This connection, which is at the heart of this book and much of my theological work, will further our understanding of how the problem of exclusion has become one of the most pressing theological problems today.

In sum, exclusion is not just a social problem; it is also a theological problem that threatens the future of theology as a whole. Theology appears to be affected by the structures of exclusion, for instance, where it shows signs of becoming a self-serving monologue—a discourse of like-minded individuals talking primarily to each other (the danger of the liberal modes of theology), where it becomes a discourse about the divine Other which never really connects to God’s and other people’s otherness (the danger of the neoorthodox modes), a turn to the language and the texts of the church which shuts out differing readings (the danger of the postliberal modes), and a turn to others which ends up in identity politics or special-interest deals (the danger of liberation modes). Without going against the grain of exclusion, without cutting through those structures which unconsciously impact theological reflection, no progress can be made. Theology that develops resistance to the powe! rs of exclusion may help to develop new models that prove useful in restructuring not only the process of theological reflection but also the church and, ultimately, even society at large.
