About the Author

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction and the focus was on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. Best stats book I've read or own

I have eight stats books in my bookshelf, from Dummy's Guides to college textbooks. Salkind's text presented the material, seemingly directed toward graduate students, in the most clear and easy to understand manner of all I've read. It was actually enjoyable to read. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this one.

My professor taught the class better than the book did. But overall this book is okay. It was required for one of my classes for my master degree. It is full of great information to help you become more of a competent counselor.

Great resource for beginners

This book, combined with the SPSS 13.0 CD-ROM is a great value.

The book actually covers SPSS 11.5, even though this "2nd edition" is bundled with version 13.0. There are only very minor differences anyway, so it is not really a problem. There is a great section on jumping into using SPSS for some practice analysis. Much of the book is very helpful as a general stats resource, in addition to explaining SPSS-specific application. I would highly recommend it for statistics class students, though not advanced statistics. Higher graduate-level topics such as mulivariate stats are not really covered, though foundational subjects like ANOVA and Regression do get explained. The software matches the contents well, since the bundled Student Version of SPSS 13.0 likewise does not allow for multivariate analysis.

What does it mean that McDonald's has become an integral part of daily life throughout East Asia--so much so, in fact, that many Asians have ceased to consider the American hamburger chain "foreign" at all? The five scholars who contribute essays to Golden Arches East have taken a novel approach to cultural anthropology. Call it hamburger historiography, perhaps, but their analysis of McDonald's ascendancy in the East has much to say about both the corporation itself and the changing values of Asian societies. Despite widespread criticism of McDonald's as a symbol of global homogeneity and environmental degradation, not all of these changes have been negative. In Hong Kong and China, for instance, McDonald's has actually contributed to improving standards of bathroom cleanliness and table manners, according to the authors. And the transformation has cut both ways; McDonalds itself has been forced to adapt to local culture and tastes. In studying how McDonald's has been assimilated into Asian societies, Watson et al. provide a fascinating portrait of cultural accommodation, compromise, and change.

Along with Coca Cola and Microsoft, McDonald's is ranked among the top five multinationals with the greatest presence in Asia. The fast-food giant has often faced hostility abroad as its critics charge it with everything from cultural insensitivity to economic and environmental imperialism. At the same time, McDonald's has proved wildly successful with foreign consumers, especially younger ones. Editor Watson and his five contributors acknowledge the concerns but do not address them head on. All six are anthropology professors at various universities, and their interest is in McDonald's as a cultural phenomenon. Looking separately at Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Beijing, each author considers demographic and ethnographic distinctions in how local consumers react and take to McDonald's products, service philosophy, and marketing tactics. They also investigate how the company has adapted its own way of doing things to local tastes, customs, and attitudes. You don't have to like or be interested in McDonalds, East Asia, or consumer practices in the economy to enjoy this book. It's insightful and an easy read, so it's worth picking up and flipping through. The book is broken up by country/region too, so you could just read about the places that interest you most.

About the Author

Wilda Rinehart Gardner received an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1973 from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi. After working as a staff nurse and charge nurse, she became a public health nurse and served in that capacity for a number of years. In 1975, she received her certification as a family planning nurse practitioner from the midwifery program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. She completed her BSN in 1979 and MSN in 1980 from Mississippi University for Women. She retired after 26 years as nursing instructor at Northeast Mississippi Community College where she taught medical-surgical nursing and maternal newborn nursing. From 1982 to 2012, she operated Rinehart and Associates Nursing Review to assist graduate nurses to pass the National Council of Licensure Exam. She also worked as a curriculum consultant with nursing faculty in the improvement of test construction. Ms. Rinehart has served as a convention speaker in several states in the southeast and has been a reviewer of medical-surgical and obstetric texts.

Dr. Diann Sloan received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Mississippi, and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women. In addition to her nursing degrees, she holds a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education, with minors in both Psychology and Educational Psychology, from Mississippi State University. She has completed additional graduate studies in healthcare administration at Western New England College and the University of Mississippi. Dr. Sloan has taught pediatric nursing, psychiatric mental health nursing, and medical surgical nursing in both associate degree and baccalaureate nursing programs. Dr. Sloan has conducted test construction workshops for both RN and PN faculty and is coauthor of the Pearson Online Review.

Clara Hurd received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi (1975). Her experiences in nursing are clinically based, having served as a staff nurse in medical-surgical nursing. She has worked as an oncology, intensive care, orthopedic, neurological, and pediatric nurse. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, and her Master of Science degree in Nursing from the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. Ms. Hurd is a certified nurse educator. She currently serves as a nurse educator consultant and an independent contractor. Ms. Hurd has taught in both associate degree and baccalaureate degree nursing programs. She was a faculty member of Mississippi University for Women; Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee; Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee; and Northeast Mississippi Community College. Ms. Hurd joined Rinehart and Associates in 1993. She has worked with students in preparing for the National Council Licensure Exam and with faculty as a consultant in writing test items. Ms. Hurd has also been a presenter at nursing conventions on various topics, including item-writing for nursing faculty. Her primary professional goal is to prepare the student and graduate for excellence in the delivery of healthcare.

Useful, but could be much better with substantial revision

I am a mathematician who is very familiar with electrodynamics and quantum mechanics.
I read this book to teach myself quantum optics.
Since I read it as a self-study text,
I will review it from that perspective.
Some of the weaknesses noted might be less important for a classroom text.

The Gerry/Knight text is billed as suitable for
"senior undergraduates and beginning postgraduates", but
I fear that undergraduates who attempt it as a self-study text
are likely to end up frustrated.
I can't recall ever encountering an undergraduate with a background in mathematics and quantum mechanics
sufficient to read this book in a reasonable time without the guidance of an instructor.
If used for self-study, I think that minimal prerequisites
would be a graduate level understanding of abstract linear algebra and quantum mechanics.
Some familiarity with Fock space and the theory of operators on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces would be desirable.

Because the book is intended for beginners,
the authors take pains to explain many things which a beginner might not know.
Most of the explanations were careful and helpful, but I was dissatisfied with some.
I read the book cover to cover and was able to follow most of it,
but some of it (e.g, much of the chapter on decoherence)
is still a mystery to me.

Chapter 9 describes recent experiments in quantum optics which
demonstrate amazing properties of light unimaginable from a classical perspective.
The presentations of the physical setups give just the right amount of detail for clear understanding.
The diagrams are good.
However, I felt that the mathematical analyses would be easier
for those with good backgrounds if done on a higher level,
and some of the physical discussions seemed obscure.

Given the authors' intended audience,
it may be unreasonable to quarrel with their choice of mathematical level.
However, it is truly unfortunate that some of
their calculational details seem actually wrong.
For example, in Section 9.3's discussion of a ``quantum eraser'',
several terms appear to be omitted from equation (9.21),
which invalidates some of the subsequent discussion.
Moreover, the discussion is obscure and seems of questionable validity even were the text's (9.21) correct.
More details can be found on my website.

I noticed only a few errors which would affect the physics,
but there are too many mathematical errors and
an unusually large number of typos.
Most of the typos are relatively insignificant,
but nevertheless distracting.
Readers should be prepared to check everything.

My copy is by now riddled with underlined statements with marginal notes
like "Why?", or "What does this mean?"
As I progressed through the book and my understanding deepened,
many of these "Why's" were erased, but quite a few remain.

The reader who wants to learn quantum optics and has
the necessary mathematical background may wish that
parts of the book were more carefully written,
but he will not be fundamentally disappointed.
This is a good book from which I learned a lot.
It seems much clearer than Scully and Zubairy's
Quantum Optics, which I read previously.

My brand new paperback copy is falling apart after only a few weeks of careful use at home.
A book this good deserves a more durable binding.

Good for beginners

I am an undergraduate and completely new to the field. I am reading this book as background for some theoretical quantum optics research that I am starting. The text has allowed me to get my foot in the door which is all I wanted it to do. As the previous reviewer noted, there are typographical errors in the book. In an ironic way, spotting and correcting these errors has kept me sharp. If a student is truly curious about the subject then, as in any field, they will be able to get through this book. As soon as one has picked up on the basic themes and equations of quantum optics, I would advise moving on to a more thorough text.

About the Author
Judith A. Lewis (Ph.D., University of Michigan) retired in 2008 from Governors State University, where she served as Professor and Chair of Addictions Studies and Behavioral Health. A licensed psychologist in Illinois, she is a past president of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors. She is co-author of MANAGEMENT OF HUMAN SERVICE PROGRAMS, Fifth Edition; COMMUNITY COUNSELING: EMPOWERMENT STRATEGIES FOR A DIVERSE SOCIETY, Third Edition; and SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING, Fifth Edition (all Brooks/Cole Cengage Learning).

Robert Q. Dana (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) is Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at the University of Maine. He has direct responsibility for all campus life programs including Greek Life, Alcohol and Drug Education Programs, Residence Life, Counseling Services, and campus-wide crisis management services. Dr. Dana spent a substantial part of his career as an addictive behaviors researcher and practitioner. He writes frequently on substance abuse and has conducted numerous studies on epidemiology and etiology of alcohol and other drug abuse. Dana has served as an extramural reviewer for state and federal agencies and as a journal reviewer for Addictive Behaviors. He teaches courses on addictions and is a member of the graduate faculty at University of Maine.

Gregory A. Blevins (Ph.D., Western Michigan University) is a retired Professor Emeritus from the College of Health and Human Services at Governors State University. He held positions as the assistant dean of the college, chair of the Addictions Studies and Behavioral Health Department, and full professor of Addictions Studies. He completed the Specialty Certificate in Alcohol and Drug Abuse in 1974 and his doctorate in Sociology in 1979. Dr. Blevins is a founder and life member of the International Coalition for Substance Abuse Educators and has served as a trainer for the Bemidji Area Office of Indian Health Services since 1988.

PLEASE ENABLE THE TEXT TO SPEECH FEATURE!!!

Please enable the text to speech feature! I commute 8 hours per week for my Masters program and I listen to my books on my Kindle device. ALSO there are individuals who cannot see or have learning disabilities that would greatly benefit from this feature. In addition, college students can catch up on chapters while they are exercising, driving, etc. Please consider this! Thank you

Near perfect textbook

I'm just about finished with an MA in psychology. This text is small and succinct yet comprehensive enough. After purchasing massive tomes for other classes only to use a small portion, I appreciate it when text can cover the material without overkill.
This text is a keeper. The coverage of the various substanes is very brief so a good supplemental text is Buzzed : The Straight Facts About the Most Used and Abused Drugs from Alcohol to Ecstasy - 3rd edition.

This is a little gem of a book if you want to understand the process of learning to be in the presence of God. Eric's understanding of the difficulties and the solutions are comprehensive. Knowing about God is totally different than being with God. I recommend this to anyone who is searching for "more" of God. Thank you Eric Gilmour for writing what you have learned about this subject, it has helped me tremendously.

I love this book

I love this book. It has compelled me to seek true intimacy with Jesus. This book is not a how to book on knowing Jesus. God used "Enjoying the Gospel" to provoke me search Him out in the scriptures and in my worship. I am so thankful for Eric Gilmour because his ministry has helped me develop a love for God that didn't exist in my heart before.
