Blue-Ribbon Pecan Pie

9-inch pie crust, unbaked
1/2 c. pecan halves
3 eggs
1 c. dark corn syrup
1 c. sugar
1 t. vanilla extract
1/8 t. salt

Place unbaked crust in a 9" pie plate. Arrange pecans in crust; set aside. In a bowl, beat eggs well. Add remaining ingredients; mix well. Pour mixture over pecans in crust. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes; reduce oven to 325 degrees. Bake an additional 30 minutes or until center of pie is set. Cool completely. Serves 8.

Another Delectable Book in the Gooseberry 101 Series

Ordered this book months ago because I knew it would be great, and finally received it after Christmas. My daughter and I own all of the Gooseberry 101 recipe books and we both love them. The recipes are yummy and easy to prepare and best of all, there are photos of each and every recipe. I'm a seasoned cook and never owned many recipe books that included photos, but since using the 101 books, I'm a great fan and love seeing the finished recipe creation. Best of all my daughter, who's new to the cooking scene, has been cooking up a storm since I gave her a set of these 101 books. Some of the books are hard to come by because they're older, but well-worth the effort in owning the entire set.

Thanks Gooseberry Patch for yet another super-fine addition to the 101 Collection. As a small aside, my I request another addition to this series: 101 Recipes for Fabulous Vegetarian Meals? Many thanks.

My Sweet-Treat Go-To

This has become my sweet treat go-to book. I absolutely love variety of great cobblers, cakes and desserts in this new Gooseberry Patch Cookbook. The Mini Pie Bites are a family favorite and such a great idea! I have a girlfriend that now requires me to bring the chocolate cobbler anytime I come over to her house. If you have a sweet tooth, you can't go wrong with this book!

I love to cook and bake and usually create my own recipes instead of following a cookbook. This cookbook is great for any level of baker. It offers step by step instructions and amazing pictures. I use it more as a resource to create my own recipes in a lower sugar version and it is perfect for that.

Proclaiming itself as the first book to focus directly on the religious experience of Generation X, Beaudoin's book is a provocative interpretation of the spiritual side of the popular culture that, he argues, has so deeply informed today's 18- to 34-year-olds. Beaudoin, a lay preacher currently working on a doctorate in religion and education at Boston College, argues that, despite popular conception, Gen-X is strikingly religious. The author gushes a book-length apologia for his generation's unabashed "irreverent spiritual quest," which includes the "meaning-making system" of their popular culture, their condemnation of authority and the institutional church and their simulated "virtual faith." This is a faith located not in traditional religious institutions but in the simulated material environment of video games and MTV videos. Beaudoin is an energetic writer, but his thinking is often sloppy and, in some cases, absurdAas when he contends that Gen-Xers have undergone Christlike suffering simply by being born into the turbulent era of the 1970s and '80s, into divorced families, into a fearful, fragmented society overhung by the nuclear cloud. Given his lack of perspective, it's easy for him to explain his generation's turn to shocking, unorthodox means to satisfy their spiritual hunger. He decodes the messages of "Xer theology" from unlikely sources: the sensual and spiritual imagery in music videos, the marking of pain and "gift of religious experience" in body piercings, identification with society's outcasts through ripped jeans. Beaudoin would have us believe that the irreverent, arrogant-unto-death thief on the cross embodies true spirituality, while the repentant thief is weak, hypocritical and outside Jesus'paradise.

This guide, much in the flavor of a coffeehouse conversation, aims to understand the spiritual hunger of those young adults between 25 and 35. A Generation Xer and lay preacher in Boston working on a doctorate in religion and education, Beaudoin considers his generation's stance toward religion by offering a theological interpretation of popular culture. In the first chapter, he explains how religion and popular culture have been ever-present and interwined in his own life. He then moves into the interpretation of pop culture, anchoring each chapter around a theme, e.g., anti-institutionalism, and then discusses the implications for contemporary religious practice. After exploring the style and meaning of religious practice in Generation X, Beaudoin closes with an attempt to integrate Generation X, pop culture, and religion together in a kind of summary. His easy style expands the scope of its readership, and the careful discussion also lends itself to further deliberation and research in this area. Interesting cultural observations on spirituality of Gen X

I felt that the author was able to incorporate good observations on the cultural nature of Gen X. The pop nature of the book and the inclusion of various types of fashion and electronic media were of importance to his subject. As a person from this generation, I was able to resonate with many of the assumptions about culture and their inclusion in the shaping of spirituality. The irreverant and ironic criticism of institutional religion found articulation in Virtual Faith as well, as it was developed from the perspective of Gen X Christianity.
I was disappointed though, by the poor use of the four music videos. I felt that too much was read into their imagery by the author. My own thoughts are that much of the second part of the book became mired in an overdeveloped desire to place spiritual meaning upon these cultural icons. I don't think that much meaning was there, which undermined the character of the book.
I did appreciate though, the book's attempt to bring together cultural and spiritual aspects in Christianity, and express the irreverent reverence of Gen X.

good premise, I have only two critiques

I read this book for a Youth and Culture class in seminary and it was by far my favorite book of the semester. Beaudoin does a good job in describing a generalized picture of Generation X's conception of Christianity, but there are two places where I feel he misses the mark somewhat.
I feel that Beaudoin could have made better choices in his selection of videos, and this is not about personal preference or taste. Soundgarden's "Outshined" or "Rusty Cage" were both more attuned, in my estimation, to the emotions, struggles, and general attitude of Generation X than "Black Hole Sun", generally speaking. Beaudoin could have also explored why a band like Pearl Jam, which is overwhelmingly non-imagistic, could still continue to have an impact despite Pearl Jam's lack of visual exposure beyond 1992. Another example: replace "Like a Prayer" with Tool's "Sober" or with Nine Inch Nails "Head Like a Hole", and you've got something. And one last musical point: where is hip-hop? Surely the amazing success of rap music in the ninties, especially gangsta rap, says something about Generation X theologically.
My second critique concerns Beaudoin's theological engagement. I simply feel that he could have gone a little deeper. I was also looking for some wrestling with the greats. I took Systematic Theology the semester before I read this book and was looking for Beaudoin to utilize Barth, Tillich, Bultmann, etc. An examination of Tillich's views of Christianity and culture would have been especially rewarding in the context of the book. It simply seemed to me that Beaudoin could have gone a tad deeper theologically.

An honest, insightful examination of a complex generation.

Using his own life and experience, Tom Beaudoin has opened the door to understanding and reaching out to a segment of our population that has been for so long misunderstood and/or overlooked in regard to matters of spirituality and faith. Although I did not agree with all of his interpretations, I thought his portrayal of suffering was very honest and on target for many in his generation. His poignant examination of Generation X with suggestions for ministry is an invaluable resource for anyone in ministry to this population, as well as for those beginning to look at the issues facing the next generation now coming of age.
One difficulty I had with Beaudoin's work, however, was its limitation as far as ethnicity and culture. Although Beaudoin referred to his peers as Generation X, he is really only examining a segment of that population. Much of his material is specific to a Caucasian middle class culture and is not applicable to others. He relies heavily on music video and as we all know, tastes and trends particularly in music vary widely between ethnicities and/or cultures. I would like to have seen him team up with other writers or sources who could have added some of the missing pieces so that the material would be more reflective of Generation X and not just a segment of it. I was struck by Beaudoin's assertion that Gen X believes in inclusivity; indeed I have in my own experience seen this to be true. However, in reading Beaudoin's book it felt as if the African American youth to whom I have ministered were invisible or non-existant. Inclusivity begins by being inclusive, and in order to avoid making the mistakes of the past generations one must determine not use the same methods. I would encourage Beaudoin and others to use that same nature of challenging traditionalism in this area as well, rather than to once again picture the same limited view of American culture that has for so long promoted suffering similar to that which he writes about in his book.

Here, this American poet, actress, civil rights activist and TV producer-director recalls her pilgrimage to Ghana in the early 1960s. Ostensibly, Angelou went there so that her son could study at the University of Ghanato put him (and herself) in touch with long-imagined ancestral roots. Sadly, she was disillusioned by the subtle rejection of native Ghanaians. Fighting this painful sense of not belonging, she plunged into activities; appearing in Genet's play The Blacks with black American performers, she went briefly to Berlin, where she underwent a searing experience dining in the home of a wealthy crypto-Nazi German. Other encounters, even the more pleasurable ones, hardly mitigate the homesickness and hurt underlying Angelou's poignant recall, which includes a meeting with Malcolm X and her visit to a village where, centuries ago, black men sold other black men, women and children to white slave traders. The fifth volume of her compelling autobiography finds Angelou in Ghana, five years after its independence from Britain. Kwame Nkrumah is Ghana's beloved ruler, and there is a sense of pride in the new country. Angelou joins a group of black Americans who have come to Ghana to be part of the great experiment. The book details her experiences within that community and as a black American confronting complex feelings in Africa, the land from which her ancestors were sold into slaverypossibly by other tribes. Angelou also writes of her emotions as a mother watching her son Guy grow to manhood. "All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes" is an effective continuation of Maya Angelou's monumental, multi-volume autobiographical narrative. This installment begins in the early 1960s, with Maya and her son living in Africa. As a whole, this book is a fascinating meditation on the ties and disjunctions that exist between African-Americans and black Africans.
Maya reminisces about working for the University of Ghana, seeking employment as a journalist at the "Ghanaian Times," and beginning to pick up the Fanti language of Ghana. Particularly fascinating are her memories of the death of W.E.B. DuBois, the visit of Malcolm X to Africa, and her visit to Germany to perform in a production of Jean Genet's play "The Blacks." Angelou's book is both the vibrant record of an extraordinary woman, and an important portrait of Africa at a key era in its modern history.

Through Angelou's Eyes

From purely a literary standpoint, I find ALL GOD'S CHILDREN NEED TRAVELING SHOES perhaps the best of Angelou's series of autobiographical works that I have encountered thus far. It is the fifth "installment," having been preceded by I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS, GATHER TOGETHER IN MY NAME, SINGIN' AND SWINGIN' AND GETTIN' MERRY LIKE CHRISTMAS, and THE HEART OF A WOMAN. While I suppose that any of these could be read in isolation, to do so would be analogous to reading a single chapter from a full-length novel. One may enjoy the contents of that single chapter but will miss all the background material that explains how the characters reached that point in time and space as well as everything that follows to explain and wrap-up the story. For the same reasons, one really should read each of Angelou's books and in chronological order, too. Consequently, if one is examining reader reviews before purchasing ALL GOD'S CHILDREN, and if this is the first of Angelou's books being considered, please wait. Reading the others first will enhance significantly the reader's enjoyment of this one.

Pure autobiographies tend, in my experience, to be rather dull reading for the most part. Where is the excitement in a list of events and dates? That sort of dry recitation of historical facts is the reason that most of us were likely bored to somnambulance by our high school history textbooks. Happily, this is not at all that sort of autobiography. What one finds in Angelou's books is the world seen through her eyes and interpreted by her mind, and she carries with her the filters built strand by strand by her life experiences.

What "life experiences"? Being born Black into a legally, socially, culturally and thoroughly segregated country. Being abandoned by one's father. Being shipped across country by one's mother to be raised by an aging grandparent. Feeling the constant scorn and belittlement fostered by racial segregation. Bearing a child when one is still herself a child. Being duped by another into prostitution. Failing at an attempt at marriage. On the other hand, conversing with such figures as Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Touring Europe as member of a musical cast. Living in Africa. Angelou's experiences, both negative and positive, were emotionally extreme, or at least significant, events, and they created interpretative filters that are quite different from those of essentially all of her readers. This difference is what makes her books captivating to read and worthy of her readers' consideration.

I suggest that the epitome of Angelou's skill as a prose author of the first five books I have mentioned above comes in the closing chapter of ALL GOD'S CHILDREN. Her encounter with the Ewe tribal women in the marketplace in Ghana's village of Keta is expressed in nearly supernatural terms. In the actual event, she is merely mistaken for another person, but, to Angelou, the encounter firmly establishes Africa as her spiritual homeland, the origin of her own ancestors who, generations earlier, were sold into slavery in a strange land across the ocean. The skill with which she describes her feelings at this encounter is one to which any writer might aspire.

I must admit to another aspect of Angelou's writing that I find almost annoying, however, and that is her repeated and continuous reference to the effects of slavery. If any evil exists in the universe, if sin seeks an embodiment, if a cause for all the misery in the contemporary world must be identified, Angelou finds it in slavery. Judging solely by the attitude revealed in these five books, one could conclude only that all Caucasians are blue-eyed devils, that they alone made possible the eternal and unforgivable sin of enslavement, that no redemption is possible and that racial integration is never achievable or even desirable. If there is such a concept as "original sin," it has nothing to do with a mythological Adam or Eve in a "garden of Eden" but rather with the insufferable conceit of Whites and the horror of slavery, most particularly slavery in the United States. To judge by the attitude that pervades these five books, one would think that Angelou was herself born into slavery, exploited economically and sexually by her White masters, and denigrated to the very edge of sanity. Not to excuse or to minimize in any way the physical and emotional pain of slavery, its immorality or absence of any ethical justification whatsoever, but "methinks the lady doth protest too much." She claims for herself an understanding of the debasement of slavery that her own history does not support. She assumes a mantle as spokesperson for long dead generations that she is not qualified to wear. To what extent historical slavery and racial prejudice may bear the blame for what were her own poor choices in life I am hardly qualified to say, yet I would caution the reader to bear in mind the fact that we are seeing events through the author's intellectual filters and that no one's filters are totally objective.

Having said that, I hurriedly add that my critical observation should in no way deter anyone from reading Angelou's books. On the contrary, while I may feel that she is at times presumptuous in assuming spokesperson status on the topics of slavery and contemporary racial bigotry, her perceptions provide many revelations for her readers and are worth noting. On now to the next book of this series, A SONG FLUNG UP TO HEAVEN.

If you're a fan of superheroes, non-stop action, or fantastic writing then you will absolutely love The Ascension.

The Ascension begins moments after the events of Super Human. The world is turned upside down, as instead of killing Krodin, Pyrokine sent him back in time, but only six years. Armed with the knowledge of the future and Max Dalton's name, Krodin set about reshaping the United States into the empire he desired. Yet for some reason six years after Krodin was re-released into the world (or a few months after the events of Super Human) the Dalton's, Lance, Paragon, Thunder, Brawn, and Abby are sent into this alternate reality with the knowledge of their own fight with Krodin. They set about fighting off his masses and trying once again to defeat this seemingly invincible enemy.

Of course my favorite aspect of The Ascension were the characters. Unlike Super Human, which acted as more of a prequel introducing the characters and setting up the story for The Ascension, this book takes the bones of the story and turns them into something greater. The characters are more well rounded, are forced to discuss greater issues such as the lines between right and wrong and good and evil, and really are just more engaging in general. My personal favorite characters this book were Thunder, Lance, and Brawn. You really get to see a different side of these super humans, explaining some of their background without dragging the story down. Not only that but Carroll discusses how Lance can always be caught in the middle of these super human issues, bringing up some fascinating points for the future of the series.

Of course most people wont delve into The Ascension for the characters, what most of the readers of this series want is action, and The Ascension has plenty to offer. Unlike some of Carroll's other books The Ascension does a fantastic job keeping the action coming while the characters develop.

All in all readers will absolutely love The Ascension. The characters are interesting and well developed, their powers fascinating, the action non-stop, and the writing superb. This is a great read for anyone (especially preteen and teenage boys), and I can't wait for the next in the series.

im a young a reader and i love fast action books. this was no exception. my only regret is that some of the simultanious story lines can be very confusing.

More superhero goodness...

If you haven't read Super Human yet, do that first. If so, you are in for a superhuman treat. If you have read the book and enjoyed the fast-paced superhuman action, then you will love Ascension even more. The characters are all back for some reality bending adventure against over-whelming odds. The plot structure is rather similar because the characters are all split up (again) and this leaves us jumping from one member or a duo and then back again. There isn't anything deep, but it is good popcorn fun, and you're left thinking if only the producers and writers of the show Heroes had given Michael Carroll a call, then we would have been in for a long-running mega-hit. Perhaps Carroll's books aren't featured in many lists of the best superhuman fiction because it is labelled YA, but they should be on every list. They certainly are on mine.

This gave me a deeper overstanding of Rastafari and the Rasta women's role. I also enjoyed making the recipes in the book especially the Jamaican Curried Tofu. Thank you for making such a wonderful book that was easy to overstand. Peace and Blessings
