The preferences and patterns of performance within languages are reflected, he shows, in the fixed conventions and variation patterns across grammars, leading to a 'Performance-Grammar Correspondence Hypothesis'. Hawkins extends and updates the general theory that he laid out in Efficiency and Complexity in Grammars (OUP 2004): new areas of grammar and performance are discussed, new research findings are incorporated that test his earlier predictions, and new advances in the contributing fields of language processing, linguistic theory, historical linguistics, and typology are addressed. This efficiency approach to variation has far-reaching theoretical consequences relevant to many current issues in the language sciences. These include the notion of ease of processing and how to measure it, the role of processing in language change, the nature of language universals and their explanation, the theory of complexity, the relative strength of competing and cooperating principles, and the proper definition of fundamental grammatical notions such as 'dependency'. The book also offers a new typology of VO and OV languages and their correlating properties seen from this perspective, and a new typology of the noun phrase and of argument structure.

About the Author

John A. Hawkins is a professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Davis, and the Emeritus Professor of English and Applied Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. He has also held previous positions at the University of Southern California and the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, and visiting appointments at institutions including UCLA, UC Berkeley, the Free University of Berlin and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. He has published many books and articles on typology and universals, syntax and grammatical theory, psycholinguistics, and historical linguistics, including A Performance Theory of Order and Constituency(CUP 1994), Efficiency and Complexity in Grammars (OUP 2004) and, co-authored with Luna Filipovic, Criterial Features in L2 English: Specifying the Reference Levels of the Common European Framework (CUP 2012).

Dentofacial orthopedics, including rapid maxillary expansion and extraoral traction, as well as functional jaw orthopedics (Herbst, Twin Block, FR-2 of Fr�nkel, Bionator) and molar distalizing appliances (Pendulum, Distal Jet, Wilson distalizing arch) then are considered. The management of Class III malocclusion with the orthopedic facial mask, the chin cup and the FR-3 of Fr�nkel also are discussed in detail. A Good Reference But Not A Primer

This book would be a good addition to your library, but if you are just learning DMX don't look at it as your first book. Start your learning process with a good book on MDX fundamentals, if in fact one exists, then use this book as an excellent means of polishing your knowledge. There is much to be learned, but only if you have a good grasp of the elementary fundamentals of DMX. If DMX is to be your specialty, this book belongs in your library.

Interesting and Thought Provoking

This book is a fast read and will keep your interest throughout. I found myself captivated by the characters and indeed identified strongly with one of them. In fact, one of the beautiful things about this book is that nearly everyone in this subculture will be able to see much of himself in one (or more) of the characters.

Not only was the book enjoyable, but I found it instructive and thought provoking. I feel like I have found out a bit about myself and this will help me live a better life from here on.

This book looks at the simultaneous processes of making and un-making of families that are part of the adoption practice. Whereas most studies on transnational adoption concentrate on the adoptive family, the author identifies not only the happy occasion when a family gains a child, but also the sorrow and loss of the child to its family of origin. Situating transnational adoption in the context of the Global North-South divide, H�gbacka investigates the devastating effects of unequal life chances and asymmetrical power relations on the adoption process and on the mothers whose children are adopted.

Based on unique primary material gathered in in-depth interviews with South African families of origin and Finnish adoptive families, the book investigates the decision-making processes of both sets of parents and the encounters between them. The first mothers’ narratives are juxtaposed with those of the adopters and of the adoption social workers who act on the principles of the wider adoption system. Concluding with a critique of the Global Northism that exemplifies current practices, H�gbacka sketches the contours of a more just approach to transnational adoption that would shatter rather than perpetuate inequality. The book can also be read as an expos� of the consequences of current inequalities for poor families.

If bacon does not immediately come to mind as an essential ingredient of Cajun cooking, then clearly you have been missing Link, the chef-owner of two New Orleans restaurants, Herbsaint and Cochon. He not only begins his premiere cookbook with instructions on making four pounds of homemade bacon, he includes such tempting items as a fried oyster and bacon sandwich, tomato and bacon pie, and catfish fried in bacon fat. Even in his vegetarian twice-baked potatoes, he cannot help mentioning, Normally I like crisp bits of bacon in stuffed potatoes. And where bacon leads, the rest of the pig is sure to follow. A classic boudin recipe is rich in pork liver and shoulder; deer sausage combines venison with pork butt; and a hearty/scary breakfast dish, oreilles de cochon (pig ears), is boudin-stuffed beignets. There is also plenty of crawfish, be it in a crawfish pie, a traditional boil or in a boulette (deep fried balls of crawfish meat and stuffing). Real Cajun, Real Good!

Initially, I wasn't overly impressed with this book, primarily because the recipes that stuck out in my head were the homemade sausages, home made bacon, pork cracklins, boudin and such. They may be Louisiana staples but alas, I would never make them. However, after perusing the pages more carefully, I found there is much to appreciate and enjoy here. The stories Mr. Link relates convey his personality. His love and appreciation for his family, friends. food and tradition are all conveyed and provide an enjoyable read. There are lots of pristine color photos of both food and family. A sturdy, quality made book.
But the heart of any cookbook are the recipes. And there are some good ones here! So far I haven't found a bad one in the bunch. I've made the Vietnamese marinated shrimp. (Delicious, but I did have to get used to pulling off their heads....hey I'm a Yankee...and I just couldn't bring myself to suck the fat out of them). The crab cakes with jalapeno remoulade (mine fell apart despite using almost double the bread crumbs recommended but it was still out of this world....and using fresh crabmeat as Mr. Link suggests DOES make a difference). Lake Charles dirty rice, German Festival Ham and White Bean Stew (great in the winter), Post K meatloaf, smothered collard greens, cast iron hush puppies (a little bland but still good...I'll tweak it next time). The Jambalaya was very tastey but I found the rice did not cook evenly. I'll use instant rice next time. Still on my list is the Baked Oysters with Herbsaint Hollandaise, Billy Boy's Crawfish Etouffee, Chicken Sauce piquant, Spicy Shrimp Creole, grilled oysters with garlic chili butter, chicken and bacon hash to name a few. I've also made his spice mix that he uses for the Vietnamese shrimp. This is a great all purpose spice mixture you can use in many dishes. Seafood, poultry, pork are all represented (there are surprisingly few beef recipes) He also gives recipes for cocktails and desserts but I'm not a big sweet fan so I haven't made any of those.
If your looking for good "home cooking" type recipes (like his Link Family Crawfish Boil recipe), this book will more than meet your expectations.

I have tons of cook books. I was sold on this one because the dirty rice recipe was the best that I have ever tasted. Dirty rice is supposed to be easy to make, and it is, but this recipe the best ever. Also tried the jambalaya and it was fantastic. This being my third Cajun cook book, my collection is complete and will be looking no further.

This is my favorite cookbook hands down

This is my favorite cookbook hands down, the stories are great and the recipes have all been tremendous. You cant go wrong buying this it really is a gem for the kitchen! I find it more than cajun as well, generally good recipes even for general southern cooking. The smothered pork roast is tremendous, always cook that for New Years Day along with the black eyed peas, rice and turnip greens (different recipe)

Sisko lives! And here's how to keep track of his adventures

I'm an avid fan of the "Star Trek The Next Generation Companion," and this all-new volume examining what is arguably the best (certainly the most controversial) Trek series is must reading for anyone intrigued by the creation, scriptwriting and production of the series.
Each and every episode is covered in depth with a plot summary and detailed history "behind the scenes" of the episode's creation, writing, and filming. One of the reasons I enjoyed DS9 so much is the involved storyline of the series--the Dominion War--and having each of the episodes laid out in chronological order, with extensive detail on the structure of the storyline and subplots, helped me appreciate even more what Berman and Piller and company set out to do. It's filled with entertaining stories and nuggets of background information--how did they do they, where did they get the idea for that, what worked (and didn't)...it's ideal for the Star Trek fan as well as anyone interested in television writing and production.
I don't entirely agree with some of the previous review comments: understand that a book like this takes time to write and create, not to mention publish, have sales reps advance into bookstores, and print and ship. I work in publishing, and with very few exceptions, publishing books takes a *long* lead time. There's no way this could have been ready (or as complete) if it were issued last year. I'd also say, again as someone working inside publishing, that adding color photographs and a hardback binding, while nice, would dramatically increase the price of the book, probably to forty dollars or above.
The very best compliment I can give a book like is that it makes me want to go back to the original source again. If you're a Trek fan, I dare you to pick this up and not get totally involved in it, and *then* want to dig out your tapes and rewatch all your favorite episodes...and even a few that this book will give you a brand new appreciation for.

A dream come true for the DS9 fan!

This amazing book is an absolute must-have for the hardcore fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine... if you are like me and savored every episode over all seven seasons, you will appreciate the author's in-depth coverage, behind-the-scenes info on every episode, and his obvious affection for the show. This book is over 700 pages and filled with new photos & illustrations I have never seen anywhere else, including really nifty things like production drawings, some hilarious props, and even a map of Bajor. The many interviews with the cast & creators alone are worth the price. If hearing "The Way You Look Tonight" makes you misty, buy this book!

The 2013 reprint is of poorer quality

The 2013 reprint is of poorer quality, printed in South Korea whilst the prior was printed in Japan. The photos are darker & more grainy & so its harder to see smaller detail like hand positions.
Excellent book, unfortunately the publishers have not done it justice.

Brilliant!!

Just what you would come to expect from one of the all time greats in Japanese Shotokan karate, a large (hard back) 240 page book packed with hundreds of small black & white detailed photos & explanations of all the 26 kata in the Shotokan canon.

Each move & many of the intermediate moves are explained in full detail under the pictures.

One nice little surprise for ALL Shotokan Karate-ka is a new (for me anyway - it's actually very old) kata called Koryu Gankaku or (Gankaku-Sho).

Each of the katas movements are highlighted with easy to read symbols to help you with speed, breathing & kime etc.

Bunkai (application of kata) is shown at the end of each kata as well as a glossary of karate terms.

Quite simply a great book to complete Kanazawa Sensei's bookshelf of books including: Black Belt Karate, Karate Fighting Techniques: The Complete Kumite, Karate My Life

At least in this book you may find all the Shotokan Kata in one place, whereas before you had to buy two books which are now becoming quite hard to get a hold of: Shotokan Karate International Kata: Volume 1 & Shotokan Karate International Kata: Volume 2

Great resource, but wait for the reprint.

I've used this book at the dojo where my family trains, and was looking to purchase a copy for home. This is a wonderful resource for Shotokan karateka, but the current prices listed by third party sellers here are extortion. The most recent printing appears to be sold out nearly everywhere, so if you absolutely, positively must have this book right now, you may be stuck with these ridiculous prices. However, I contacted the publisher about it because it is still listed on their website as a current product, and was told that a new printing has been authorized and is in the works. So, if you can be patient, you should be able to buy a copy in the near future for the list price.

"What I really like about the 7th edition is the additions to the text seem to come from the authors' experience as group leaders or as counselor educators. For example, the futher explanation of the types of anxiety a client may feel (of sounding 'not intelligent', of being overcome by intense emotions, etc.) seem to come from feedback given to the authors from actual clients or counselors-in-training."

About the Author
Marianne Schneider Corey is a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and a National Certified Counselor. She received her master's degree in marriage, family, and child counseling from Chapman College. She is a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work and was the recipient of this organization's Eminent Career Award in 2001. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and is a member of that organization. She also holds memberships in the American Counseling Association, the American Group Psychotherapy Association, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Western Association of Counselor Education and Supervision. In the past 40 years, Marianne Schneider Corey and Jerry Corey have presented workshops in group counseling for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland. Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services and Counseling at California State University at Fullerton. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California. He is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; and a National Certified Counselor. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17, Counseling Psychology; and Division 49, Group Psychotherapy); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Both Jerry and Marianne Corey received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and both also received the Eminent Career Award from ASGW in 2001. Dr. Jerry Corey was given the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from California State University at Fullerton in 1991. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling and ethics in counseling. He is the author or coauthor of 15 textbooks in counseling currently in print, along with more than 60 journal articles and book chapters.

Cindy Corey is a California licensed clinical psychologist with a private practice in San Diego, California. She worked for over a decade as a full-time Visiting Professor in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology at San Diego State University, in both the Community Based Block and Marriage and Family Therapy programs. She received her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego and her Doctorate (PsyD) in Multicultural Community Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in Alhambra, California. Dr. Corey has focused much of her work in the area of counselor education, specializing in multicultural training, social justice, and community outreach. In addition to teaching at San Diego State University, she taught part time in the PsyD program at Alliant International University in Alhambra. She has also worked as a contracted clinician for Survivors of Torture International, focusing primarily on helping Sudanese refugee youths to adjust to life in the United States, gain employment, and attend colleges and universities. Dr. Corey works as a multicultural consultant and has created clinical intervention programs, training manuals, and diversity sensitive curriculum for a variety of schools, businesses, and organizations in the San Diego area. Her private practice focuses mainly on working with women, couples, counselors, and graduate students in counseling programs.

Worst text I've ever read.

I'm using this book in a graduate level counseling course and I think it is terrible. The authors write in circles; there is way too much rambling compared to an actual point being made. It feels like the authors jumped around within each chapter. Most chapters repeat the same information over and over in the exact same context, just phrased a little differently each time. I love group therapy, but this is an awful textbook.

I love this book!

I love this book! The Coreys are exceptional writers with exciting and innovating ideas to share. If you only buy one book on this subject, it should definitely be this one! And if you ever come across this book in a "bundle" with Groups in Action workbook and DVD buy it immediately, the DVD alone is incredible!

This book was okay. It is well-written and fairly easy to read. It was required for our group counseling course (grad-level), which is for both clinical mental health and school counseling students. This book definitely is geared towards the therapeutic group rather than a school group. We were told that it is the best group book out there.

We also watched the dvd during the course. It does a nice job showing what a therapeutic group can/should look like at each stage; however, I do wish they had just followed one or two people through the dvd because it was hard to actually see the growth in the participants due to editing.
