Family Favorite Dr. Seuss

My brother had this book when we were kids in the 70's...my mother read it to us weekly. The stories are entertaining with hidden life lessons, I had the book in my possession while raising my daughter and loved sharing the stories with her. I purchased this book for my friend who is expecting her first child, I've tried to find/buy it in the past for other friends/family members who were expecting. The last time i saw it in a bookstore about 10yrs ago and it was $100...sadly I left it there. This version of the book is a bit smaller, the cover is not as thick...but the illustrations are just as I remember them. Quite a find I must say, my mom came over and saw it sitting on the table...she was impressed too.

Susan Wysocki (left) has had a career as a banker, a chef, and a college professor. She has been teaching in the business management department at The Culinary Institute of America since 1999. In addition, she is the owner and operator of Babycakes Caf� in Poughkeepsie, New York, where she lives with her two sons, Alex and Oliver.

Michael Nothnagel (center) has taught mathematics at the high school, community college, and university levels for the past 14 years. He has been a faculty member at The Culinary Institute of America since 2006. He also constructs crossword puzzles for major newspapers and other venues.

Laura Dreesen (right) has been with The Culinary Institute of America for 15 years. During that time, she has taught mathematics, cost control, introduction to computers, and computers in the food business and is coauthor of the college's personal finance course. She is an avid gardener and a foodie through and through.

Good for the kitchen, missing business section

I attended the CIA a number of years ago and felt like I learned a great deal about the mathematics of running a business as well as a kitchen. I purchased this book expecting to find both sets of information now that I am responsible for the business as a whole. Unfortunately, this book only contains the algebra necessary to do recipe costing, and half of it is worksheets. There is no information necessary to do P&L calculations or any other larger business concerns.

Ktichen Math 101

I'm not really sure how to rate this because it does do what it says it will, I suppose, but it isn't at all what I was looking for. I own a restaurant and have come up with my own guidelines for managing food cost, but I was hoping for some professional verification that I'm doing it right. This isn't the book for that level of operations. This truly is just MATH - converting pounds to ounces, ounces to tablespoons, that kind of thing. Scaling recipes up and down. And stuff like, "If I need 5 pounds of chopped onion, how many raw onions do I have to buy?" I was looking for something about restaurant math from the owner/manager standpoint. But if you're looking for Kitchen Math 101, I doubt you could do better.

Prominent author and professor Malik takes an in-depth look at the history and development of a country often at war, shrouded in distrust and uncertainty, and struggling to maintain its status as a nuclear power. Beneath the country's desire to hold on to its nuclear threat is the fear of an attack from India, a prominent and close enemy. Pakistan's Pushtun Taliban have created huge problems in the West, but at home, distrust of U.S. and British powers is rampant; the war on terror is often labeled by Pakistanis as a war on Islam. Malik discuses politics with an optimistic textbook approach that illuminates what Pakistan has suffered in its struggle to maintain a fragile Democracy. Malik examines the country's shift to the epicenter of violence, highlighting the country's leaders as, largely, cults of personality who ignore advice from other acting members of government and make promises they don't intend to keep. Malik's impressive knowledge of the region makes this most complicated of countries easy to grasp.

About the Author
Iftikhar Malik is a professor of history at Bath Spa University and has taught at Oxford University and Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad. He is the author of many books and journal articles including: The History of Pakistan (2008), Islam and Modernity: Muslims in Europe and the United States (2004), Jihad, Hindutva and the Taliban (2005) and State and Civil Society in Pakistan: Politics of Authority, Ideology and Ethnicity (1997). He lives in Oxford and in Bath.

A thoughtful and scholarly analysis of the country, highly recommended

Pakistan is on the lips of many in today's world where terror is the great evil. "Pakistan: Democracy, Terrorism, and the Building of a Nation" analyzes Pakistan in hopes of understanding its role in today's war on terror and what Pakistan's true position is in the war on terror. Looking at its long history and the role conflict has played with it, a state trying to find its own identity between the Islamic world and the behemoth of India. "Pakistan" is a thoughtful and scholarly analysis of the country, highly recommended.
