developing awareness

Tracking is ultimately a spiritual activity, an active meditation. This book covers skills that are rarely taught in white man culture. It is clearly based on something similar to indigenous cultures, that see themselves as part of the larger system, not separate from it. The author has succeeded in putting into words something that is really beyond words. The Secret Knowledge of Water : Discovering the Essence of the American Desert gives something of an awareness of living like this. Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony with the Earth Mother (Bk.1) is the only book I've found that covers this in any detail, from the indigenous side. It is part of a 3 volume set, but I've never found the other 2 volumes. Entering the Mind of the Tracker: Native Practices for Developing Intuitive Consciousness and Discovering Hidden Nature covers this from a slightly different angle, with case studies that show how animals interact with what is around them. Tom Brown, Jr., talks at length about maintaining awareness, which he does with continual scanning, asking questions, and a quiet mind. The exercises in this book are useful, and complement Tom Brown's Field Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking. I like this book, there is not much filler, it's all business. This is not only for trackers. I would say this book would be very useful for martial arts practicioners, especially, and anybody else who needs to improve their awareness. Civilized people have about as much awareness of their surroundings as oppossums. This is a good text on improving that. Index Tracking: Essential Guide to Trailing Man and Beast and Tracking and the Art of Seeing: How to Read Animal Tracks and Sign do cover some of the same material. I really, really like this book.

Attune your Awareness Skills

This book by Jon Boyd "Connecting Into Observation and Awareness" is an interesting addition to the trackers professional library. The majority of this book focuses on observation and awareness discussing the ability to be aware of one's surroundings and adjusting to various situations without succumbing to complacency. I think the author does an excellent job tying the first half of this book into the application of visual tracking which is covered in chapters six and seven. The tracking aspect of this book entails a review of the fundamentals of visual tracking for the uninitiated followed by the detailed aspects of reading/interpreting tracks and sign. The author incorporates these tracking chapters into exercises and/or a laboratory scenario to help sharpen the readers' observation skills. This is not a long book or a physically large book, but at 115 pages it is densely packed with useful information. This book is not just for trackers but for anybody looking to improve their overall observation and awareness skills, whether you are a motorcycle rider looking to improve your on road defensive driving and observation skills for increased survivability; or a soldier on patrol in a village in Afghanistan looking for disturbances in the local base-line. If you think this book interests you I would also check out "Index Tracking: Essential Guide to Trailing Man and Beast" by Freddy Osuna.

Concise discussion of observation and awareness

Jon Boyd has given us in "Connecting into Observation and Awareness" a useful overview of first how we observe, second how we are aware with exercises to expand and improve ourselves in these areas. These exercises are practical and useful in expanding our observation and awareness, in our houses, in our urban areas, in our yards and parking lots (used as examples in the text), and in the wild outdoors.

Then Jon ventures in Tracking. While his information is good, it is presented in lists and pictures. Jon covers in 30 pages what took Tom Brown to cover in two books which are summary texts to his weeks long classes over several years. To give Jon credit he does say that one needs lots of "dirt time," introspection, intuition and practice to gain proficiency in the tracking skills. Jon briefly touches on, in his discussion of tracking, what took Tom Brown many years to learn. That is the perception of head position, arm position, intent, and general attitude from observing details of the track and sign. While Jon has given us a pointing finger, he has not delivered the moon to which that finger points. If you want the moon, get Tom Brown's very basic book "Nature Observation and Tracking" and then Tom Brown's very advanced book "The Science and Art of Tracking." But to appreciate the "Science and Art of Tracking" be prepared to spend the hours and weeks and months of dirt time necessary. These are tracking tricks of the Apache Scouts of old. If you merely want look at the moon and be aware of the possibility, this is the book. It's exercises are simple and valid. But then advance to Tom Browns basic book, "Nature Observation and Tracking" for several years before embarking on the long journey into "The Science and Art."

Jon's book is well and clearly written. For the most part, the pictures show what they are intended to show. I believe Jon Boyd accomplished his purpose in writing this book, and that is to awaken modern man to the use of our ancient heritage with references to help us get further

Confessions of a Queen B* is the first book in the young adult Queen B* series by Crista McHugh. I loved this book so much!I found it to be a breath of fresh air. The mean girl cliche has seemed overdone and tired to me lately, but Crista McHugh breathes new life and heart into this story of self professed Queen B* blogger, Alexis. Her blog is like a mixture of gossip girl and Harriet the Spy. And what I loved was that each chapter started off with a mini excerpt from her blog, the Eastline Spy. (Eastline is the high school name by the way.)

While the blog and Alexis’ status as Queen B* of the high school is a central theme of the story, it almost felt secondary to the wonderful friendship that was forming between Lexie (as he calls her) and Brent. Brent is uber popular, and is paired up with Lexie for a very high tech baby project. Together they are responsible for raising a baby. (which I am beyond happy they did not have when I was in high school, because that would have been a nightmare for me.) Brent is so great. I loved how grounded and stable he is. He is just an all around great guy.And he actually took the time to tell Lexie that he wasn’t buying her mean girl act, listen to her and actually get to know her. It melted my heart.

And Confessions of a Queen B*, while being a really sweet budding relationship between the two of them with flirting and cutesy banter, it was so innocent and developed at what I thought was a wonderful and appropriate pace. There is a hint of more to come but I kind of love Crista McHugh for setting up the series the way she did. She didn’t rush into romance just for the sake of having romance. When I finished the book I flipped out and immediately checked goodreads to make sure that this was part of a series. But never fear, dear readers, it is. There will be more in store for Lexie and Brent. Crista I hope you have something great in store for them in the next book, because I really really like them together. They are probably in my top 5/10 book couples of 2015.

Fans of Young Adult high school setting books that are craving something fresh and so, so well done. Check out Confessions of a Queen B*. It is a great YA book, that is not cookie cutter, and will have you smiling ear to ear. I think you will love it just as much as I did.

can't wait for the next book!

I do love myself some good old high school hierarchy drama. I really don't think life gets any more exciting. It's like being at war, and perhaps that's why - being a huge fantasy nerd - reading the HS misery of someone else is oddly and sadistically gratifying. Isn't that what a lot of fantasy tales are about? The little guy overcoming all odds and defeating the great evil in the land and winning the heart of the fair princess/prince? It's exactly why nerds, such as myself, clung to fantasy while going through the hellish middle/high school years.

Alexis Wyndham is one such heroine. The kind that takes matters into her own hands and defies all social norms to overthrow the high school royalty. But what sets her apart from ALL THE OTHER HS Dramas out there is her voice. Alexis is hilarious. At least, I thought so. She brought humor to situations, even when she was terrified of what she was doing. She's loyal, sticking up for a sister who dwells with the enemy. She's vulnerable, while trying desperately to keep her tough girl veneer. She's basically everything I wish I could have been when I was young.

Alexis is bound and determined to rid the halls of Eastline High from the tyranny of the popular crowd, except... there's one small hitch in her plans. She's falling for the golden boy, the top dog. And for good reason. Brett is pretty much perfect, and, as it turns out, a lot more like her than Lexi is comfortable with. It's like realizing that all the beliefs that you've held close to your heart for so long, lived your life by, may not actually be true. This is why Confessions of a Queen B* is only book 1 in a trilogy! The book ends in some murky waters, and I cannot wait to see where Lexi's story goes from here!

WOW AWESOME BOOK!

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It centers around high school students but didn’t feel too high school. It was a really great read that everyone could connect with Lexi was a character you can connect with. I have a theory that everyone in their life has felt bullied. I don’t care how perfect your life is, you feel not good enough at some point. Lexi was that girl who had a best friend who hurt her. She fought back. She became the Queen B and in turn put up walls all around her.

Bret was the wrecking ball that came in and started to tear those down. How could you not love this guy? He was incredible! I LOVED Bret, and I truly cannot wait to see what happens. I will put this on my must read list, and suggest you ONE CLICK NOW!!!

Conscious parenting is one of our next most important frontiers as we begin the 21st century, and Diana's contribution is a must-read for everyone wanting to make our world a better place.

Diana writes in such a way that she easily opens and expands your mind to see new ways of parenting that are practical and playfully fun. I especially enjoyed the chapter on practicing true listening skills to which inspired me further in my desire to listen in all my relationships. Even though I'm not a parent, I'm planning on exercising the 12 keys with my "Little Brother" in the "Big Brother program" and to my younger inner self. If you are a parent, then this would be in my opinion a must have in experiencing the true joy of parenthood!
