About the Author
Moira Weigel was born in Brooklyn. Her writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Nation, The New Republic, n+1, and The New Inquiry, among other publications, and she is currently completing a PhD in Comparative Literature at Yale University. After years of first-person research on dating, she is off the market. Labor of Love is her first book.

What a wonderful read! Labor of Love is a fanscinating exploration of how dating has evolved in response to economic, social, and cultural shifts over the last 100 years. While the book is well researched and certainly a serious intellectual exploration of the subject matter, drawing on over 100 years of material, it's hilarious and entirely accessible. I honestly couldn't put it down. Would give it 100 stars if I could!

This book is absolutely incredible and you must read it. I've been binge-reading it for the past 24 hours, almost done at this point, and have already emailed or texted 5 people that they must get it ASAP. It has upended some of my long-held convictions of what's "traditional". It has touched upon and tied together all the recent trends - from "Marry Him" to "Rules" to online dating and many others. It added fascinating, often funny and sometimes painful (e.g. AIDS epidemic) historical narratives. It has put words to feelings I've long tried to express myself - the despair of having to play a certain role in dating and suppressing my desires in every step. Most importantly, it has framed what I have long thought of as my personal issues as societal changes or problems at large. I know I will keep thinking about this book for a while, will keep recommending it to others, and will undoubtedly reread it. Many thanks to the author for all the work (and heart) that has gone into researching and writing this book.

Compelling and engaging!

Five stars! This was a compelling read - Weigel really digs deep into our culture and will make you think about how you think about love (or how you haven't thought about it!). Well-written and well researched with some new information. On a personal level, I have experienced a great deal of growth in my years of dating - this book sheds a great deal of light on where some of my frustrations have originated. As long as there are others who are ready to work and change the social norms, I think we are on the right track!

Poorly designed, print on demand.

I was disappointed to receive this book only to find it was a print on demand copy. The awkward formatting and margins make it more difficult to read and make the content feel less polished. I'll update the review once I'm able to get through it. I hope the content is better than the presentation.

L. A. Paul received her PhD from Princeton in 1999, and taught at Yale and the University of Arizona before coming to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The book for transformative times - highly recommended

I'll preface this review with the statement that I am a scientist, not a philosopher. In fact, this may be the first philosophy text I've ever read (and I haven't finished it yet). I was attracted to it because of an interesting column written about it in the NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/25/opinion/david-brooks-the-big-decisions.html), and I made the uncharacteristic decision to purchase it. That said, I have found the book thus far to be intellectually and personally challenging. I have also found that it has helped me understand a transformative process through which I am currently going, which I doubt I would have understood, accepted, valued or loved had I not read this book. Transformative experiences don't come along every day, and by the very virtue of their being "extra-epistemic", can be easily feared, abhorred, misinterpreted, and the like. Yet, virtually everyone will have such an experience over a lifetime, and possibly many more than one. Having a deeper understanding of that process, such as can be gained through reading this book, can make a big difference at those times. I thank the author for her work, and heartily recommend the book, even to those who, like me, never quite understood the value of philosophy.

It is excellently written, with a fine understanding of the philosophical problems arising from transformative decision-making - in other words, those decisions we come to that will eventually change our lives. Through a series of case-studies, partly friviolous, partly serious, Paul makes us aware of how difficult such decisions are, both philosophically as well as emotionally. The case-studies include deciding to become a vampire (or embracing the vampiric spirit), deciding to have a child, and (for deaf people especially) deciding to have an implant so as to restore the power of hearing (or to make profoundly deaf people hear for the first time).

Paul writes in the second person, addressing all arguments to an imaginary reader. This gives the book a personal, intimate tone that perhaps works against the complexity of the ideas advanced. Sometimes the ideas are a little difficult to follow, especially for readers unacquainted with decision theory. Maybe the book can really only be appreciated by philosophers, rather than those seeking to understand what kind of decisions or ideas help to inspire transformative thinking.

What really undermines the book is the emphasis on rational thinking. Personal experience has revealed that many transformative decisions represent a leap in the dark: we decide to change our lives without really knowing what the consequences might be. Such decisions can be bold in the extreme, but they help us develop strategies of coming to terms with new experiences and developing new ways of thinking that are not always based on previous knowledge, as Paul claims. Sometimes that previous knowledge proves unhelpful, especially when we compare the new experience with our previous experiences. These normally turn out to be value-laden comparisons that perpetually change over time.

Sometimes the human mind is "unreasonable," prompting us to make decisions which we cannot explain, either to ourselves or to others. We either answer "I don't know," or "it just seemed right at the time." Such responses undercut the basic thrust of Paul's argument that we can find a rational justification for transformative thinking. We tend to let our emotions rule our brains, especially when these kind of decisions need to be made: sometimes we regret them, but on other occasions we are grateful that we set aside our reason and jumped off the emotional cliff instead.

Excellent Overview but a bit tedious at times

If you want a detailed overview of the classic medieval period from the 11th - 14th centuries, this is the book for you. It provides an excellent narrative analysis of Europe's primary players during this period, and the impact/relationship of the church, both in secular and spiritual matters. As the title implies, the book reviews and demonstrates that the secular monarchies of the time and the church were heavily intertwined and needed each other -- or at least were interdependent.

The book is a well organized historical narrative that looks at medieval society as a whole, first by examining the social and economic structures, the church, and the politics of the period. Given the importance of the Holy Roman empire at the beginning of the period, and the political links between it and the church, there is a focus on that relationship.

However, that does not mean other monarchies are ignored, although not as fully explored. Additional chapters examine England, France, Iberia, eastern and northern Europe, Sicily, and the Crusader Kingdoms. Berber links them all together in what only can be described as a historical tapestry. One thing to keep in mind is that this is a "traditional" approach to history in that it examines the leaders and politics of the time, vice the everyday person.

The only downside to the book, and it's a natural by-product of such a complicated study, is that it becomes difficult at times to track all the players, and their relationships to each other -- it causes the book to bog down at times. Having said that, it's definitely worth reading to get the big picture.

In my book, "Astronomical Symbols on Ancient and Medieval Coins", I devote a number of chapters to the astronomical symbols that were depicted on medieval coinage as signs of divine right to sovereignty. As part of my research, I read numerous books on medieval history, and I found that Barber's book, "The Two Cities," was of some value.

Although there were many items of interest that added to my understanding of the history of this period, I found that I was often asking more detailed questions than Barber's book could answer. However, Barber does provide a good overall starting point and provides a lot of information in a single volume.

I recommend this book to all who are interested in reading an introductory book on medieval history. I bought the 1994 paperback version, and do not recommend spending the high price for a hardcopy. This book is just a starting point for those readers who are serious about medieval history.

Hades makes the Underworld look good!

I love this author's ability to take a classic tale and give it a modern twist. I have always loved mythology so I was excited to read what she had in store for Hades and Persephone.

As I've come to expect the detail was so vivid I felt as though I could experience the Underworld. The feelings between Hades and Persephone are bittersweet right from the beginning. Its also interesting to see all the pieces come together as the story unfolds.

You don't have to be familiar with this myth for Hades to make sense. But, if you know the original story, don't shy away! This story takes quite a few different twists and turns than the original.

I hope we get the chance to read more about Hades and Persephone and their family and friends.

All that I love in tragedy

I want to start off this review by staying that this was my first time reading any of Eldar Lore/L.B. Dunbar's work. I purchased this book on my own and was not solicited to write a review. This review also does not contain spoilers as I encourage others to purchase and read the book.

Now on to my review....

I loved this book. Let me reiterate: I LOVED this book. This book enraptured me with the curious attraction that unraveled into soul binding love between Hades and Persephone. This book also so beautifully destroyed me with the despair and tragedy that their love caused them. You will fall in love with Hades. You will love his darkness, his passion, his sensuality, his devotion. He will consume you and you will hope for more at the end of this book.

I will say the only downside is that this book left me with questions about secrets and back stories that I hope will be revealed in the future.

Absolutely Brilliant

I was sucked into this book from page one. L.B Dunbar writing as Elda Lore blew me away with this twist on Greek Mythology I couldn't put it down.
The descriptions of the characters were phenomenal and I had a clear look at what the characters looked like and what they felt.
Even though I wanted this story to keep going and the ending wasn't exactly what I wanted, I ABSOLUTLEY LOVED IT, and it gave me hope that we will continue to hear about Hades and Persephone. I also look forward to hearing more about all of the characters we were introduced to in this 1st installment of Modern Descendants!!!
My heart was ripped out of my chest, then was slowly put back together as the pages passed.

About the Author

Norman P. Lieberman is a chemical engineer with 50 years of experience in process plant operation, design, and field troubleshooting. An independent consultant, he troubleshoots oil refinery and chemical plant process problems and prepares revamp designs. Mr. Lieberman teaches 20 seminars a year on “Troubleshooting Process Plant Operations” and has written eight books on plant process operations and problems.

Elizabeth T. Lieberman is a chemical engineer with more than three decades of experience in the process industries. She works as a consultant troubleshooting oil refinery and chemical plant process problems. Ms. Lieberman also has experience in ceramic clay processing, refractories processing, and the conveyance of slurry flow.

Great book to get a practical understanding of many process related ideas, not a guide book for rigorous calculations

This, like all of Norman's books, is a collection of nice, practical advice for a working process engineer.

Because this book is also written to be easily understood by plant operators as well as process engineers, the calculations presented are less than rigorous (and sometimes perhaps technically incorrect). However, the point of this book is not to introduce rigorous calculations. Most people use software for those calculations now anyway. The point of this book, which it accomplishes well, is to give a down-to-earth, hands-on view of process engineering that is missing in so many other textbooks. There is a lot to love in the way that this book throws off the chains that hold many authors back from explaining things well in the attempt to make sure they are technically and precisely correct according to their academic peers.

This is an excellent engineering book. Very practical. Calculations are very simplified and not overly complicated as others have stated on the reviews. I wish my school would have recommended us this book to read along side all of our other text books.

Great handling of delicate subject matter

Karyn Mitchell had been date-raped and for the past several years she'd been struggling to put her life back together. Finally she convinces herself that local DJ, Christopher Faulkner, is the man who can solve her problems. After all, he offers sex advice nightly on the radio. Maybe if he'd just put a little of his advice into practice with her, all her problems would be solved. When she finally gets him to agree, it's with the understanding their affair will be short and sweet with no emotional involvement. Only that's easier said than done when Karyn finds herself falling for Dr. Desire. Chris has emotional baggage of his own which comes to a climax when he fails to keep the one promise he made to Karyn -- to keep her safe. I enjoyed this debut novel from Kira Sinclair and look forward to future books from her.

Strong Debut Book

Kira Sinclair delivers a great story in her debut book--I like the unique hook and Sinclair explores a difficult subject with sensitivity (but without dragging down the overall tone of the book). Karyn and Chris are interesting, multi-faceted characters, and their chemistry sizzles.

Whispers in the Dark is a wonderful story by new author Kira Sinclair. She tackles a very difficult subject - date-rape - in a manner that few could, turning it into the triumphant story of a woman finally putting her past behind her and learning to love and trust again. The story is not only believable, but well-written. I look forward to more from this author.

Great possibilities, missing most figures, pictures, table formatting

I bought and returned this Kindle book in minutes. This book didn't make the electronic transition in one piece. Many, if not most, of the figures and pictures are missing but the descriptions remain. Data that should have been in the form of a tables appears to have been processed as text by OCR software.

I hope that this book is corrected and rereleased. The author is enthusiastic about his subject and I suspect the book is a good introduction to the subject. I will update this review when the book is rereleased.
