About the Author
Valentine Fontama is a Principal Data Scientist in the Data and Decision Sciences Group (DDSG) at Microsoft, where he leads external consulting engagements that deliver world-class Advanced Analytics solutions to Microsoft’s customers. Val has over 18 years of experience in data science and business. Following a PhD in Artificial Neural Networks, he applied data mining in the environmental science and credit industries. Before Microsoft, Val was a New Technology Consultant at Equifax in London where he pioneered the application of data mining to risk assessment and marketing in the consumer credit industry. He is currently an Affiliate Professor of Data Science at the University of Washington. In his prior role at Microsoft, Val was a Senior Product Marketing Manager responsible for big data and predictive analytics in cloud and enterprise marketing. In this role, he led product management for Microsoft Azure Machine Learning; HDInsight, the first Hadoop service from Microsoft; Parallel Data Warehouse, Microsoft’s first data warehouse appliance; and three releases of Fast Track Data Warehouse. He also played a key role in defining Microsoft’s strategy and positioning for in-memory computing.Val holds an M.B.A. in Strategic Management and Marketing from Wharton Business School, a Ph.D. in Neural Networks, a M.Sc. in Computing, and a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Electronics (with First Class Honors). Recommended for AzureML and Data Science

This purchase review is based on the Alpha Book (pre-publication electronic version): I will have full access to the production version of the book, at which point I will update this commentary.

Short Review:
Having owned and read many books on data science, I recommend this book for both advanced business analysts and data scientists. In brief, if you plan to use Microsoft Azure Machine Learning for commercial or non-profit purposes, you need to have this authoritative reference available. The cost (either paperback or electronic) is minimal compared to the value you will receive from this book and its recommended resources. This book will guide you in how to make a data science experiment, and the best practices from AzureML, straight from the people who helped spearhead this new cloud-based technology.

This longer review provides details on the book for the purpose of informing a purchase decision. I will review the technology, and end on a description of my background.

This book is valuable to advanced business analysts since it does not assume previous exposure to Data Science. The book provides a foundation of the key ideas of data science, describes how Microsoft Azure Machine Learning exposes data science, provides several business use-case scenarios for using the technology, and has many references for further learning. The book describes how to get started in minutes: matching my first-hand AzureML experience with the book’s exercises, I can verify that you can see results in minutes.

This book is valuable to already-trained data scientists (statisticians and application developers) since it provides a foundational look at how Microsoft is providing Azure-based (cloud) model building and web services. First, this technology works on any browser. You can be using the laptop OS (including Apple, Linux, UNIX) or tablet OS (including Android, iPad) of your choice and produce data science experiments with Microsoft Azure Machine Learning. Second, this technology is priced on usage. Third, although this technology has its own native machine learning algorithms, you can alternatively (or in combination) use R code for your experiments. Fourth, this technology allows for creating a web service, and even provides the application connection code (in C#, Python, and R) to your web service. There is a well-done video from Microsoft on this last point on YouTube: contact me if you cannot find it.

Microsoft Azure Machine Learning is cloud-based, managed from a browser, and you can try Azure free for a month (given a certain number of credits) to get started. Microsoft recently announced a free tier which does NOT require a credit card or Azure subscription, excellent for students (whether high school, university, graduate school). Microsoft previously (and still) produces SQL Server Data Mining, which requires the Windows OS and a SQL Server license: I have worked with clients doing serious production projects with that proven and scalable technology. By contrast, Microsoft Azure Machine Learning works in Azure (cloud), requires data to be in the cloud, and provides an easy way to produce a web service (build applications for enterprise through entrepreneurial use).

Chapter 1 provides foundational definitions for data science. Chapter 2 is a specific how-to-build an experiment with Microsoft Azure Machine Learning. At the end of the second chapter you have a fully working experiment in minutes (though, you will need to shut off your phone and email, and be in a place where you can concentrate). Chapter 3 discusses what is available with R, and you build an experiment: you can have an R widget which accepts up to 2 dataset inputs and a ZIP file with your R code (uploaded from your operating system, which need not be Windows).

Chapter 4 describes the difference among the machine learning algorithms in the categories of regression (linear regression, neural networks, decision trees, boosted decision trees), classification (support vector machines, Bayes point machines) and clustering (k-means).

Chapters 5 through 8 are especially valuable to advanced business analysts or people new to data science. Each chapter provides a description of a type of common use for machine learning, along with a business problem and specific experiments. This book is written by the people who helped build the technology, and the book’s first author Roger Barga had a key role in leading this technology’s development. The key development team included experienced Microsoft professionals who have contributed to Microsoft Research, Bing, and other areas in Microsoft. All the book authors have been contributors to training their fellow Microsoft professionals and also the general user community in data science, and you can find their contributions by searching for them in Bing.

One area which this book could have stressed more is the strength and depth of the Microsoft community, and the communal use of AzureML. The technology has an active forum hosted at Microsoft’s website supporting your technical Azure questions. Microsoft has a new blog on machine learning, including and beyond AzureML. There is an area called Connect where you can report bugs or provide feedback suggestions. If you create a Microsoft partner relationship, you might be involved in the development of new Microsoft technology. Next, we know from many data science competitions that the largest projects are completed with teams. Microsoft Azure Machine Learning was made with teams in mind: you can create workspaces and invite people to jointly have access. People working across time zones can develop experiments 24*7, if they so choose. That option might be important if you are needing to ramp up a new application for an entrepreneurial venture. Microsoft is uniformly encouraging professional team collaboration through AzureML and Office 365. Finally, there is a Machine Learning Marketplace already available where you can both purchase and publish experiments. Microsoft has already published some free demonstration experiments, and is hoping developers will use the marketplace to license their data science work.

I will reinforce a consistent message in the book: more training leads to better results. It is true that you can get started in minutes, but you can also do many other things in minutes like learn to drive or cook. To become proficient, and especially in a competitive data science scenario (commercial companies competing for business) your team will need more training. It’s one thing to drive or cook non-competitively, and another thing to compete for million-dollar driving or cooking contracts. The book has many links throughout all chapters encouraging further study.

This first version purchase review is based on the alpha pre-publication edition. I will revise this review once a final book is available. I have some pre-publication errata (none of which devalues the substantial contribution of this book):
* The book talks about the “telecommunication industry” but that expression is usually “telecommunications (plural)”
* The book claims that Microsoft Azure Machine learning uses R version 4.1.0, but R is at version 3: they mean 3.1.0 — that version reflects at present, and AzureML will be continuously updated.

I am a consultant focusing on data science: I help non-profit and for-profit companies establish best-in-practice commercial-grade enterprise technologies for advanced analytics. For years, I have been part of the Microsoft MVP program. Along with dozens of others, I participated in the beta development of Microsoft Azure Machine Learning. Also, I developed a personal relationship with especially two of the book’s authors, Roger Barga and Val Fontama (though I had already been friends with all three on Linked In). I have been to Microsoft Seattle to have training on this technology, and have presented this technology for several PASS user group meetings. I have doctoral training in this area, and have taught undergraduate and graduate level statistics, and contributed to peer-reviewed research. I provide data science training, blog on data science, and have free presentations (including AzureML) posted on Slideshare and YouTube. I have written on machine learning for Gigaom. Physically unreadable

Update 2: Apress acknowledged the problem and has done a 2nd printing of the book. I just received an updated copy from them and am pleased to report that the images & screenshots are greatly improved. Hopefully this is the version that future Amazon shoppers will receive. I look forward to now returning to this book to explore it's content and learning about the Azure ML offering. While waiting for the second printing, the authors kindly provided a kindle copy of the book which is ok for reading on the desktop/web kindle reader but the formatting does not work well on paperwhite kindles (though that's not unusual for technical books like this)

Update 1: I contacted Apress to point out this problem (clearly nobody their bothered flipping through the pages before shipping these off to Amazon & other stores). I was expecting something like "oh wow we'll look into how this problem slipped through the cracks of our editorial process, here's a copy of the ebook in the meantime." but instead they simply said that I am welcome to return the book back to Amazon. Dropping my review to 1-star as a warning for future buyers... I hate to do that because the actual content is probably pretty decent and this problem isn't the fault of the novice authors but folks should be warned that the paperback is full of images containing important text you can't actually read.

Just got this paperback version of this. Haven't read it yet but I excitedly flipped through the pages as soon as it arrived. It has lots of screenshots of the Azure ML tools and other diagrams which is great. Not so great is that these images are tiny, have tiny font, and that font is usually a pixelated light grey on top of a slightly lighter grey background, making them generally unreadable and useless. I might still try to read the book without the benefit of the screenshots and update this review to reflect that - but we're not off to a good start. I would have expected the Apress editors to catch this glaring issue (especially given that they specialize in software). If you are interested in this book, the ebook version *may* (I'm not sure) not have been crippled by the low-fidelity image printing.

This is an excellent book to get you started with using cloud-based machine learning. The book approaches the problem with an overview of how machine learning can be used by businesses, and walks the reader through examples that can be followed in the Azure Machine Learning preview. This is a game-changing technology and the book does a great job of making it approachable to a variety of audiences, from executive to software developer.

For purposes of clarification: Puer Papers is not a book by James Hillman, but rather a collection of nine essays by various authors, including James Hillman. Four of the essays are by Hillman. It is excellent insight by excellent thinkers.

Dr. Peter Gevorkian, PhD is President of Vector Delta Design Group, Inc., an electrical engineering and solar power design consulting organization, specializing in industrial, commercial and residential projects. In the past several years, the company extended its expertise in the filed of renewable energy sources such as solar power, fuel cells and micro-turbine cogeneration. Since 1971, Dr. Gevorkian has been an active member of the Canadian and California Board of Professional Engineers. After reading the first of Dr. Gevorkian's works on sustainable energy systems I thought it would be interesting to see what could possibly be added to his latest. The second book is intense in its content. Packed with so much information it would be overwhelming to read cover to cover - rather it is like an encyclopedia on the subject and a very useful reference. For an architect or engineer wanting to learn how some of these systems might be integrated in a project they are working on, or for a layman to have a savants knowledge of these subjects, I give it a high recomendation.

Excellent Text on Solar Energy

Dr. Gevorkian has done great work in writing on one of the most important technologies in the world today. The book is well organized, easy to read, and useful for those with engineering or non engineering backgrounds. I read it as a business student, with no engineering background, to increase my knowledge of renewable energy. I found even the technical sections relatively easy to understand. The book not only discusses solar technology, it also gives examples of solar applications, and lists leading solar companies. The end of the book gives a good overview of the other renewable technologies. This text is highly recommended.

Samuel Keen

Samuel Keen first found an interest in web development while traveling abroad, when he learned how to build an online photography portfolio. A trained musician, he found that the same interests drove his web development: "Both music and the Web have frameworks that give us almost endless abilities to build and be creative." Returning to the UK, he began designing and developing websites for people in creative industries. Since 2011, Samuel has worked almost exclusively with Drupal. He is particularly interested in the frontend, UX, and automated workflows, with a passion for cutting edge Sass. He currently works as a frontend developer for Cameron & Wilding, a Drupal development agency based in London. Samuel has worked on projects for The Economist, the Imperial War Museums, London South Bank University, and The Telegraph.

Edward Crompton

Edward Crompton has been developing with Drupal since he was first hooked by version 5 in 2007. His adventures in open source software development have taken him from the so-called Silicon Roundabout in London to the villages of South India, where he built an application for gathering data about school building projects. He's now based back in London, where he can often be found riding a rusty bicycle and digging in his rented potato patch. Edward works as a Drupal developer for Cameron & Wilding Ltd. Krishna Kanth

If I could, I'd demand a refund.

The technical review and editing was awful. The code examples had so many errors, it distracted from the concept.

The author knows his stuff, no doubt. But the poor editing made that knowledge impossible to understand.

This is why people pirate books: they don't mind paying for BOOKS, they mind being tricked into paying for JUNK.

is not worth the price and time

I'm a Drupal 7 developer for years. For me, "Drupal 8 Development" was not worth the price and time to read.

I bought this book with a Kindle format. Before buying it, I could read only the table of contents and the first chapter. I cannot judge the quality of the book and bought it as a trial. If I read more chapters before buying it, I didn't buy the book.

I don't understand who are expected as the main targets of this book.

For Drupal beginners, this book has no big pictures and lacks easy explanation for basic concepts. Authors suddenly start to explain something without explaining basic concepts and background. Beginners will be surprised and overwhelmed and get little knowledge reading it.

For experienced Drupal 7 developers, this book is too superficial. For example, this book introduces the well-known Devel module. The actual explanation for Devel module is only one use case of node generation with Devel generate module. There's no explanation for dpm() and dd() and kint(). Most of Drupal developers will be surprised if they hear a explanation like "With Devel module, you can bulk-generate many nodes." I wanted to ask "Only that?!" reading the book.

There's a sentence in "Who This Book Is For":

"Whether you are new to Drupal or an experienced web developer, you will be able to master both basic configuration and advanced module development in Drupal through this book."

I'm sure that you will NEVER ever master the basic configuration nor module development by reading this book.

I don't think all chapters of this book are terrible. Some chapters are good. But I need to say that the most of knowledge are already available on drupal.org and blog articles of top Drupal companies... I also think that the explanation for Drupal 8 on drupal.org are much better. If this costs $10~15, It may be good.

Worth the money.

I have worked with drupal 7 for about four years now, for drupal site development and working on a few custom codes. Trying to learn drupal 8 was a little overwhelming but this book pulled me through. Normally a person would need to go to different sources to learn most of the things wrt drupal 8 but that are all present in this book.
Not sure about a beginner but this will definitely help someone who knows the basics of drupal.

Not as good as others like it...

I ordered this book as well as Edible Wild Plants by Thomas S. Elias & Peter A. Dykeman. This book relies on drawings and has very few color photos whereas the book by Elias and Dykeman is all color photos and a much easier to use and higher quality guide.

Good for research, not so much for quick reference

This guide has a lot of good information if you have time to piece it all together. I bought it to try to identify plants in my area that would be good for foraging. The way this is organized, it's hard to quickly identify local flora and fauna. It is mostly categorized by plant species, then you have to see if that plant is in your area. I think it would be easier if it were categorized by state/region, then by plant type, etc or even if it were categorized by season so that I know what I could be looking for today. Another helpful arrangement would be by use (salad-type greens, spices, teas, starches, etc.) There are a few color pictures of plants in the wild, but most illustrations are pencil drawings, which for me is not very helpful especially when a poison plant and a safe plant look the same except for a few minute differences. If the apocolypse were to happen tomorrow, I would likely go hungry for a couple of weeks trying to find my way through this book. As it is now, I am using it as a starting point to compile my own unique foraging guide that's organized so that it's more functional.

Not very helpful.

I recently went on a camping trip in Tennessee. I've been trying to perfect my bug out bag through trial and error. One of the things that I thought would be important for me to have is a guide to edible plants for the area that I live in. This book had good reviews and I do a lot of my purchasing through Amazon so I thought I'd give it a try. While I was out hiking I picked a number of plants to take back to the camp sight. But when I tried to use this book to identify the plants I was disappointed. The hand drawn pictures were not enough for me to positively identify any but a couple of the plants that I harvested. Even without a picture a good description of the plant would have been enough for me to know what I had. Unfortunately the book didn't provide enough of a detailed description for me to be sure that what I had was edible or poisonous. My advice is to look for a guide that either provides a color photograph, not a drawing of the plants, or at least provides a better description of the plants. I have to add one star for the effort I'm sure it involved in making the book but other than that it doesn't have much going for it. Not a good buy.
