Nicely done, and very readable.

Paul Kriwaczek could orchestrate the flow of information like few others. I supposed I've read everything of his by now, and I can say that pretty much anything he ever wrote is an exceedingly comfortable read, this book being no exception.

Kriwaczek produced an outstanding computer instructional documentary series for the BBC in the early 1980s called The Computer Programme that set the trend for several more such documentaries to follow. That, coupled with my enjoyment of his non-fiction books on the prophet Zarathustra, the greater history of Babylon, and the history of Yiddish civilization, inspired me to get this book also, and I was not disappointed.

Good basic book for the beginner. I caution that it is somewhat dated in a few areas. Was first published in 1998. Camera angles, lighting and a lot of basic stuff may never change. Happy I own it.

In his searching treatise, he seeks to restore an equilibrium between personal liberty and the common good, urging the diverse strands of America's social fabric to come together, to commit to a core of shared values that will help renew the family, schools and public institutions. Arguing that rights and responsibilities go hand in hand, he champions the two-parent family, national service involving voluntary participation in agencies such as the Peace Corps and Vista, a nationally standardized public school curriculum, community courts as alternatives to the official judicial system, schools as character-building agents and devolving federal functions to voluntary associations and other community bodies. Challenging liberals and conservatives alike, Etzioni, a professor at George Washington University, cuts through a welter of issues, from bicultural education to curbing alcohol abuse, in this timely contribution to the debate over what constitutes a good society.

This chapter of sociologist Etzioni's (George Washington Univ.) ongoing communitarian campaign breaks new ground but ends up mired in intellectual bickering. Proponents of individual freedom find the communitarian emphasis on shared social values dangerously close to authoritarianism. Etzioni's current response to this fear is a reformulation of the golden rule: ``Respect and uphold society's moral order as you would have society respect and uphold your autonomy.'' For Etzioni (The Spirit of Community, 1993, etc.), following this rule in any society requires maintaining a balance between individual freedom and social imperatives, with the content of political action at any given time or place determined by whether the society has moved too far in either direction. There is much common sense here, and a laudable intention to develop principles that can be applied in the real world. Unfortunately, more effort goes into rebutting critics and splitting hairs with other communitarians than into sustained consideration of substantive issues. Etzioni's interest in extending arguments within the continuing intellectual debate is understandable, but for anyone not directly involved in the discussion, other concerns are more important. His use of the golden rule when prescribing policy for the US, for example, suffers from the unwarranted assumption that applying his principle is a relatively straightforward matter. Even if everyone were to accept balancing individual and social concerns as the appropriate goal, assessments of current conditions and the measures required to stabilize the scales are hardly uncontroversial judgments that follow easily from the premise. Etzioni's seemingly endless effort to find the middle ground leaves him with something more akin to Aristotle's golden mean than a rule, golden or otherwise, and more substantive work is needed to defend specific proposals. But my guess is that even those predisposed to be sympathetic to communitarianism will be disappointed in it. . . . Mr. Etzioni wants to confront and deal with every possible objection to the claims he makes. And so off we go meandering along lanes and byways, forgetting the central thrust of the argument. Learned Introduction to Social Ethics

My eyes glazed over in places, and I had to struggle to finish the book, but on balance believe the author provides a learned introduction to social ethics and the topic of how morality, community, and democracy are inter-twined.

My over-arching note on the book is that information can and should be a moral force, and a force for good within any community.

The author's bottom line is that morality must be inherent in the individual--it cannot be imposed, only taught--that those who consider themselves religious are not necessarily moral, and that politicians cannot be neutral on moral relativism, or they open the door to moral extremists.

Among my notes in the margins, inspired by the author: cannot turn responsibility into duty; citizens failing to be socially responsible can open the door to tyranny; anarchy comes with excessive autonomy--deviance allowed is deviance redefined as acceptable; communitarians may be an alternative to the extreme right, something is needed with the collapse of the democrats; organizational morality is important--should corporations be allowed to degrade and exploit humans in the name of "neutral" economic values?; shared values are the heart of sensible sustainable policy making; laws can inspire corruption and crime; inherent morality is the opposite; many policies (e.g. transportation, housing, education) do not provide for social impact evaluation; no such thing as "value free" anything; monolithic communities harm the multi-layered community.

Given seven layers of dialog, from neighborhood to national, it is possible to have every citizen participate in a national dialog in the course of a single day. This makes it irresponsible for any of us to accept a political process that claims to be value neutral while opening the door for extremists. I have said this, but this excellent book documents it: you get the government you deserve. Participate, or lose it.

Was missing a crucial term:

The word 'free association.' As in, societies, plural. The author posits a singular 'the "S"ociety, as if such were inevitably formable, as by forced association, and then proceeds to speak for what is best for 'it.'

Society, from the latin, socius: ally, known companion, as in, we freely choose our socius under a model of free -association.- In the American political context, we enjoy the tools of all of the 1st Amendment -- including and especially free speech, to clearly identify ourselves to each other for the purpose of selecting our socius, to define friend from fool-- no matter how we define friend, no matter how we define fool. If we do not actually have that freedom, then in fact, there is just one singular "S"ociety, and we are chosen for it before our birth. That distinguishes totalitarianism from individual freedom. We are one nation, composed of many societies, dedicated to our mutual freedom -- ultimately from each other.

Those of us with more or less stronger influence by our atavistic herd mentality genes rail at the hairshirt of individual liberty unequally. In America, barely yet, it is still possible to freely form societies, plural, under a model of free association. We have yet to concede Durkheim's lament (that ancient mankind has for centuries mistaken the totem 'God' for "S"ociety/the tribe, that "S"ociety is the True God, the state is its proper church, and it is the proper function of the state to 'socialize' the population via the machinery of state: exactly what we should expect in any Theocracy.

A reason for the appearance of such a more muscular 'R'eligion over a hundred years ago can be found by reading Scott Nearing's "Social Religion" from 1906, available on Google Books. Traditional 'R'eligions weren't muscular enough about pursuing Jesus' mission here on earth, and so...

Durkheim, prominently, in his summary of Religious Formes:

"Society is not at all the illogical or a-logical, incoherent and fantastic being which has too often been considered. Quite on the contrary, the collective consciousness is the highest form of psychic life, since it is the consciousness of consciousness. Being placed outside of and above individual and local contingencies, it sees things only in their permanent and essential aspects, which it crystallizes into communicable ideas. At the same time that it sees from above, it sees farther; at every moment of time it embraces all known reality; that is why it alone can furnish the minds with the moulds which are applicable to the totality of things and which make it possible to think of them."

About the Author

Rasmus Lerdorf started the PHP Project back in 1995 and has been actively involved in PHP development ever since. Also involved in a number of other open source projects, Rasmus is a longtime Apache contributor and foundation member. He is the author of the first edition of the PHP Pocket Reference, and the co-author of the first edition of Programming PHP.

Kevin Tatroe has been a Macintosh and Unix programmer for ten years. He is an experienced PHP developer, knowledgeable in the changes coming with PHP 5. He is also co-author of the first edition of Programming PHP.

Peter MacIntyre lives and works in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Lacks in structure, examples not great

I bought this book with the intent to have it as my coding companion. I am disappointed. Besides some typos and messed up code (for example the date formats on page 407 are all screwed up), I take issues with the following:

- The book is not useful as a reference. For example, Chapter 5: Arrays, mentions some of the functions which apply to arrays, but does not go into any details. The array functions are listed in the reference section, but without knowing that the function applies to array objects, there will be no way to know what to look for. For example, the "usort" function, which takes a function reference to do the element comparison, has only a cursory mentioning in the Arrays chapter; it is covered in the reference, but there was no way for me to know what to look for without looking it up online. The "+" operator, which merges two arrays when given arrays as arguments, is not covered at all (or perhaps I couldn't find it).

- The code examples are bad. Authors have used their initials in some examples related to string comparison, but it takes some effort to follow the code when you have strings such as "njt", "jj", and "jht". I would have preferred "abc" and "xyz". The code examples are HTML-centric, and include many tags, which make reading the code hard; for example, "kt" (page 135) could have been simply "Kevin, 492". There is no separation between code and output -- no empty line between them, and they use the same font. The reference section does not contain any examples or in-depth explanations, or any gotchas.

I still open the book on occasion, but it is not my primary tool; I only use it to supplement the information I find online. Inevitably, I always compare to another O'Reilly book, David Flanagan's excellent JavaScript book, which beats any online JS resource I have found so far. I was hoping that the Programming PHP would be my ultimate PHP resource, but it did not meet my expectations. Bottom line: I could get along without it just fine, with the abundance of freely available, albeit not always very well structured information online.

Short lived Expectations

If you are like me you will be influenced to purchase this book mainly on the reputation of the publisher - O'Reilly. The rest of the decision making could be the customers' reviews and maybe based on the amazon's "Look Inside" feature.

So before purchasing the book I did a quick scanning of the index and TOC I left with the impression that this book will be kind of the books of "in a nutshell " category. But after receiving the book I tried to use it as I planned to - as a blog style feature exposer, if you wish authors' rants on the matter. In other words I expected all major features to be concisely described and put to practice by authors' grasp of the subject. I guess that was also authors' intention, but the delivery of it by my opinion didn't hold it.

They did some useful categorization of the core functions, but a lot of space is wasted by merely repeating facts, which can be found on the Internet, and which is also suggested by the authors. That disclaimer by the authors alone made the life of the book to be shortened dramatically. The rest of the book, before the reference guide (Appendix A) could be found in better explanations from other books, which even don't have this ambitious subject matter and still can deliver better job (cf. book by David Powers, Luke Welling, etc.).

In the final analysis this book was a disappointment for me, even though published by O'Reilly. And because of it short life the fate of the book will be early retirement to the recycling factory.

Not Good

O'Reily books have the same pattern. They take content that should have been one book for maybe $50, and divide it out into 3 or more books adding up to a heftier profit. This book a nice quick reference, but doesn't cover the language in it's entirety (or close enough to from my experience with other books) or provide any actual examples, rather brief one line syntax examples. I've programed C++, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, and SQL while attending a state university for a degree in computer science. While examples can be redundant because concepts of programming are understood, a decent example is truly the best way to observe case implications of syntax. For example, when the book talks about constants and the define("name",value) function, it fails to mention when used in a string and output, the constant is not interpolated (the user sees COUNT, instead of say 3). In my experience I've run into a dozen of these situations I wish the book would have at least mentioned. This is important to know, and more important to know how to work around and do what you want. It's these details that make a solid programming manual, which this book claims to be. It is truly and introduction and quick reference. If you are not already an experienced PHP programmer, and you are going to deal with PHP at least somewhat in depth, you are better off looking elsewhere.

I dusted this reference off to look up something, exception handling... Wasn't there! He has 2 pages on error handling, but absolutely squat on try-catch-finally and throw, which do exist in PHP 5 (and hopefully earlier). How worthless, I own this book but turned to a quick google search because it fails. I've decreased the rating from 3 star to 1 star. I see no O'Reilly books in my future, so many bad experiences with them.

I was just trying to confirm that ellipsis (...) was not valid syntax in PHP like in other languages where it means whatever/any exception.

Great Book - Helped Crohn's Disease

Praise God for Dr. Fuhrman's work and his texts on nutrition and health! Having been diagnosed with Crohn's disease for nearly 6 years and taking the medication the doctors told me to, was still having occasional problems and left wondering if this was how I was going to have to live for the rest of my life. I had read in the Bible that fasting is a valuable spiritual discipline and can be used to draw one closer to God by finding in Him a source of spiritual nutrition and strength available nowhere else. (Not to mention that Jesus gave His disciples instructions on how to fast when they did - expecting them to after His departure.) I had even experienced this. However, after being told by my doctor and others how important it was to keep my weight at a healthy level I decided that fasting my not be a good idea, since I didn't want to get even thinner. Well, I should have had greater faith :(

It was remarkable what even a short 1 day (and later 2 day) fast did for my digestive health. The rest from digestion improved how I felt very quickly and the improvement lasted. I have also read Eat for Health and implemented many of those concepts into my life and God has blessed me substantially. I am no longer taking medication at all - no asthma medicine (taken since I was 10 years old), and no Crohn's medication!

Definitely recommend this book.

GREAT BOOK

I wish Dr. Fuhrman work was a prerequisite for middle and high school, college students. What if this book and all of his other books were Regents classes that you actually had to pass, what would be available to our children. Most importantly, what future could we all live into that would make a difference for every aspect of the planet. What if when we went to the doctor, the first question they asked is what have you been eating, when is the last time you fasted, or do a 30-day colon cleanse in addition only eat raw vegetables during this time, how much medication would anyone be taking, how many aches and pains would people complain about, and how much more peace we can have in accepting our differences

Outdated advice confirmed by Dr. Fuhrman's office

I believe Eat to Live taught me more about nutrition than any other book besides How Not to Die by Greger. So I thought, ok, fasting might be the next step, and bought this book. I wrote to Dr. Fuhrman's office to ask a few questions that came up for me. This was the response I got:

"While Dr. Fuhrman says that fasting may be beneficial for certain medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, since he wrote Fasting and Eating for Health in 1995, there have been research advancements in the field of nutritional science pointing to the healing effects of a plant-based, nutrient-rich eating style. After careful review of thousands of nutritional research studies, Dr. Fuhrman teaches that commitment to his nutritarian eating program will provide the same health benefits of fasting. The difference is that fasting provides only short-term results, while commitment to eating nutrient-rich, plant-based foods gives long-term results. Consult your local physician before beginning any fast."

Then why is this book still for sale with no commentary in the foreword or introduction, an update that says, hey, this is old information? It would still be interesting, but then you would know that it's purpose was more to understand Fuhrman's approach in the 90s.

The short of it: the book is interesting, but you're going to get outdated info.

Irreversible thermodynamics, which is developed from the equations of classical thermodyn- ics, centers on distance-dependent forces, and time-dependent ?uxes. The force ?ux equations of irreversible thermodynamics lead are generated from the intensive and extensive variables of classical thermodynamics. These force ?ux equations lead, in turn, to transport equations such as Fick’s ?rst law of diffusion and the Nernst Planck equation for electrochemical transport. The book illustrates the concepts using some simple examples.
