Be SURE to get the hardcover version because the paperback does not include the author's notes

The hardcover version includes, at the bottom of many pages, the author's notes. These notes should be considered an essential part of the book. They are interesting and designed to enhance and embellish the text. Do not purchase the paperback version, because it does not include those essential notes by the author.

Obviously, this book (in hardcover form with the notes) is essential reading-- everyone who is able should invest the time to absorb this important, very moving, stereotype-shattering, great/classic work of non-fiction. According to Wikipedia, since 2009 this book (in Russian) has been required reading by Russian high school students (in Russia).

One of the greatest tragedies in the history of mankind

One of the greatest tragedies in the history of mankind, period. The Soviets outdid Hitler and imprisoned and killed around 14 million of their own people. It's mind boggling! And it's true. Sadly, it's still happening, on a much smaller scale, but this system is still in use to this day. Solzhenitsyn has done a wonderful job of collecting numerous prisoner accounts and turning them into a very readable series of literature, despite the danger it brought to him and those close to him. He will always be a hero of mankind, in my eyes.

Devastating

I made a large order of books including this one. I have wanted to read it for a long time and chose it as the first book to tackle. Big Mistake! It is riveting history . . . but after the first couple days I can only handle a few pages at a time. It is devastating in its account of brutal inhumanity and Solzhenitsyn's surprising introspection. It is also disturbing that one can see some of these same patterns emerging in various aspects today across the globe.

While none of my comments might suggest a glowing review, I really intend for them to be. If this isn't essential reading for every person interested in either history or in humankind's destiny I don't know what is.

Get it! Read it!

Excellent book

I think everything that needed to be said has been said by Richard. This is an excellent book for those who want to get their hands dirty with Wireless Security. One of the areas in IT that will never die down, not anytime soon at least, is security. IT security is especially HOT right now, and a lot of companies are paying more attention to what they should have years ago. In my home city, Philadelphia, there is a project called Wireless for Philly that is supposed to bring wireless connection to everybody. Now, while people see that as just another development in this great city, I look at it as an opportunity for people who are smart enough to protect this kind of network. This book does the job. I am going to suggest that if you know you are not going to have time to dedicate to this book, don't pick this book up. You're better off! Because if you do pick this book up, it's going to be hard to put it down.

Wi-Foo: The Secrets of Wireless Hacking

(I bought this book back in 2009 and I am finally reviewing it)
It is a good reference book but not really a must have, considering it was published in 2004, but I guess one can glean some useful information in attacking/defending a wireless network.

I'd recommend downloading Backtrack 5 and using the Aircrack-ng suite if one wants to give it a try at cracking wireless networks. WEP is very easy to crack (I have seen phone numbers being used as the key). It irks me that the authors would recommend hiding the SSID and using MAC filtering because it would be "raising the bar" for a bunch of script kiddies looking for free Internet. Those two are useless and shouldn't be even considered as adding an extra layer of security as both are revealed when a wireless client connects to an access point. WPA2 (with a complex password of course) is good enough to keep out the average Joe freeloader.

It is known that Kalasha is an old language, definitely two thousand years old and probably four thousand years old. Georg Morgenstierne says in his books that Kalasha has been spoken “for thousands of years.” Morgenstierne describes them as “among the first wave of Indo-Aryan Immigrants”. Rudyard Kipling wrote in “The Man Who Would Be King” “These women are whiter than you or me. . . . It's a mountainous country, and the women of those parts are very beautiful." These people are said to be descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great.

About the Author
Georg Morgenstierne was a Norwegian Linguist, one of the last of the old school of Linguists. He was associated with the University of Oslo in Norway and today there is Georg Morgenstierne's house in his honor located at Blindernveien 31, entr. From Moltke Moes vei. Morgenstierne was born in 2 January 1892 in Oslo, Norway. In 1924, he undertook the first of his two major linguistic expeditions. He arrived in Kabul with a personal letter of introduction to King Amanullah of Afghanistan from the King of Norway for permission to conduct his linguistic researches. The importance of this letter cannot be underestimated. Afghans have long been paranoid, xenophobic and suspicious of outsiders. An adventurer who undertakes to travel into the remote tribal areas of Afghanistan has virtually guaranteed himself a short life. King Amanullah had prisoners brought from the jails of Kabul to Morgenstierne so that he could interview them and learn about their languages. In this way he was able to learn about many languages spoken in Afghanistan plus he was able to learn about the Khowar Language which was spoken in Chitral on what is now the Pakistan side of the border. In 1929, Morgenstierne wished to return to Kabul to continue his research but he could not do so because by then King Amanullah had been overthrown. Therefore, Morgenstierne went to what is now the Pakistan side of the border after which he wrote another book, Report on a Linguistic Mission to North-Western India ISBN 0923891145. Morgenstierne took extensive notes and after these two visits he spent the next nearly 50 years of his life studying his notes and researching the languages he had studied there. Morgenstierne died in Oslo on 3 March 1978 with a manuscript in Khowar on his desk that he had been researching at the time of his death.
