The only misstep in Dahl's corpus of children's books

The Roald Dahl stories still speak to adult kids like me. However, I've noted that this sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the only weak link in his otherwise excellent corpus of children's books.

I will just offer my brief impressions of this book.

This story is made up of two halves. The first half focuses on the journey back to the factory. The Elevator links up with a space hotel and Mr Wonka and the Buckets are chased by Vermicious Knids. Once they are back at the factory the story changes gear to talk about the abuses of Wonkavite by the grandparents. The Elevator links both halves of the book because it is used for all the journeys that Charlie makes. However this does not disguise the fact that this book has two distinct halves that do not cohere together.

The writing style is laboured here and lacks freshness. Also, the jokes come off as lame and feeble. Only Willy Wonka holds the book together.

As such, this book is not quite as compelling and coherent as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

It Is Just Terrible

I enjoy Roald Dahl stories, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is certainly a favorite of mine. Published in 1972, the first part clearly was influenced by the at-that-time recent Apollo missions. This would not have been a bad thing per se, but the story he chose to tell as Charlie and company were in space was, simply put, boring. Here he had this wonderful opportunity with the space hotel to create another fantastic environment for adventure and amazing things to happen and instead he gives us a boring hotel in space and a goofy president of the United States. Some of the characters, such the grandparents, were not written the same was the first book and were instead whining the whole time. In the end, this book adds nothing to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It reads as a completely different story with Charlie and the gang inserted into it as an afterthought.

My 9 year old loved this book and is asking for more books from this Author. She read this in school with her class and since next year we are homeschooling maybe these other books would be great for book reports? Anyway I think these are great for kids around 9 and up.
This book is about what happened after Charlie won the factory. IF you want to know what all it is about I just can't spoil it for you but I will tell you it has something to do with space..

Lucy Willis is a Member of the West of England Academy. She leads very popular international painting holidays to exotic places for The Artist magazine and runs painting and printmaking courses from her house in Somerset. She has won many painting awards, including the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery, and is represented by the Curwen Gallery in London. She is author of Light in Watercolour (HarperCollins) and Travels with Watercolour (Batsford).

Beautiful and Informative

A beautiful book by one of the masters of the technique. Numerous reproductions used to illustrate all aspects of light and shadow in watercolour, and Willis pretty much covers every angle. I particularly enjoyed the "Themes and Variations" section, which demonstrates her range, as well as the possibilities of working in watercolour. So lovely to look at that it works as both a coffee table book and a manual. Highly recommended for anyone interested in watercolour or painting in general.

This is a Beautiful Book!

From the introduction to the index, there are pictures of Lucy Willis' gorgeous paintings on every page, including double-page spreads, and each picture is accompanied by comments about choice of location, how it was affected by light or shade, or how she went about painting it. The book is packed with information, including five demonstrations. It's not a book which covers how to do basic washes, etc., but complete beginners (and I am one) can learn so much about the interaction of sunlight and shadows. This is not only a detailed book, but a lovely book to simply enjoy reading.

About the Author
Ellen DeGeneres is a beloved stand-up comedian, television host, bestselling author, and actress. She hosts the syndicated talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and was also a judge on American Idol in its ninth season in 2009.

DeGeneres has hosted both the Academy Awards and the Primetime Emmys. As a film actress, she starred in Mr. Wrong, appeared in EDtv and The Love Letter, and provided the voice of Dory in the Disney-Pixar animated film Finding Nemo, for which she awarded a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress, the first and only time a voice acting won a Saturn Award. A trip to a better world...amazing!

Reading this book is like traveling to some beautiful alternative universe where people are kind, love is everywhere, and life is good. It's more than just a "funny" book. It's a complete experience of another, nicer and more intelligent way to view the world.

I felt different after I read this book. Smarter. Nicer. Stronger. Happier. The world looked a little bit different. And I felt better about everything. (And I was happy already).

But the book is not only uplifting and empowering. It is hilariously funny! Much funnier than her previous two books. They were light time passers. Good for a chuckle. But Ellen has matured since then. And this book is at a higher level in all departments. I found myself laughing constantly at how clever something was. And I rarely find a book laugh out loud funny. But this one certainly is.

Full of Ellens winning life philosophy...told in the form of funny stories. Some true, some not. There is love. Freedom of thought. Creativity. Inspiration. This book felt like more than a book.

It feels like an experience. An experience not to be missed. Recommended.

Leave it to Ellen to make the Audiobook Different than the print edition.....

This is the third book for comedian/talk show host Ellen Degeneres and, if ever there was a book that should be "read by the author", it's one by Ellen. She honed her craft of comedy by doing "stand-up" and she actually "performs" the audio version, more than just reading it. Ellen talks fast and so the 3 hours on the three CDs literally fly by! And the words aren't all the same as the print edition (which I also read through). She re-wrote parts of it to "talk to - you - the listener" and even adds a chapter (Chapter 29) just for the audiobook. Speaking of chapters, the print edition does not have numbered chapters for these short essays. But Ellen announces a number before each one. Since I started with the audio version first, I wondered - when I got to the chapter titled "Meditation", which contains 20 seconds or so of silence - how she'd deal with this in the print edition. So I looked and there were three blank pages. The reverse holds true for the chapter titled "For the Children" where there are full-page illustrations to color. For the audiobook, Ellen tells the listener that there is a .pdf file on the CD with the illustrations - though I haven't checked that out yet.

The print edition is 240 pages with short chapters and plenty of space between the lines so you can easily pick it up and put it down as time permits. These are short essays of observations on everything from being judge on American Idol to being married to her wife Portia. Either format will entertain you - it did me - if you are an Ellen fan (I am). The Print version allows you to go back and read - or share - a special chapter., while the audio version allows you to hear her voice and timing.

Laugh out Loud funny

I don't normally write reviews but I had to review this book because I love Ellen and love this book and want it to be successful for her! Funniest most witty book I have read in a long time. You really have to know and appreciate Ellen's humor to read and understand this book. It very much reminds me of her stand up comedy dvd "here and now". It is a lot of the same humor and I can literally hear her voice and how she says things while I am reading this book. This book is not only hysterical but it also has really wonderful words of wisdom in it. She brings you back to a much simpler time and makes you realize how ridiculous life has gotten with laziness, busy-ness, and technology to name a few. I read this book in a day and it was amazing from the first word to the last.

Read some of it, but had to stop because the material is dense and dry. It also lacks a clear focus and seems to be confused altogether. I would avoid this book if you're looking for a clear and simple read.
