About the Author
Alan C. Acock is a sociologist and a University Distinguished Professor in the School of Social and Behavioral Health Sciences at Oregon State University. He was also recognized as the Alumni Distinguished Professor based on his work with students. He has published more than 130 articles in leading journals across the social and behavioral sciences, including Structural Equation Modeling, Psychological Bulletin, Multivariate Behavioral Research, Journal of Gerontology, Journal of Adolescence, American Journal of Public Health, American Sociological Review, Journal of Marriage and Family, Social Forces, Educational and Psychological Measurement, Journal of Politics, Prevention Science, and American Journal of Preventive Medicine. He also authored the text A Gentle Introduction to Stata.

The free user manual is quite similar!

I found this to be one of the least satisfying Stata books because the author does not go much beyond the free user manual on SEM provided by Stata, which is surprisingly user-friendly. Indeed, this book is among the thinnest of the many Stata books available. Many terms and options are not described fully beyond the free manual. The index is close to being worthless. My standard for Stata books is Mitchell's, "Interpreting and Visualizing Regression," which adds a LOT to the free manual, is extremely well written and is organized in a way that anyone can easily find what they need. If you want a quick overview of SEM in Stata, this book is OK. But the free user manual in Stata is surprisingly user-friendly and is remarkably similar to this $60 book!

Highly recommend

In a nutshell, buy this book if you want to learn about SEM. I have had several other books that my professor used as textbooks and are widely cited, but this book is by far the most helpful one. Acock foresees and explains readers' common questions/misunderstandings using very simple language. He also presents formulas and commands in a way that is easier to digest. The price is a little steep -- that's why I borrowed this book from our library. But I'm totally considering buying this book for later reference. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in learning SEM using STATA.

Great book to indroduce SEM in Stata

This is a great book to introduce SEM in Stata. Great examples and easy to understand. I would rate it at beginner/intermediate. Only problem is that Stata 13 is coming out now - it will have more SEM features that won't be covered in this book.
